We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Heather Luciani a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Heather thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
I am a huge Jack White fan. When we first started Rag and Bone Records, we were doing a lot of “dirty digging”. We travelled all over Texas and surrounding states to purchase record collections. We would answer Craigslist ads, Marketplace, and referrals. It was the best time. Rag and Bone by The White Stripes became our Theme song. We would always play it on our way to the dig and as we were waiting to be led inside the house/shed/storage unit/abandoned thrift store, we would look at each other, smile and say “Rag and Bone”. Subsequently, when our hobby started to become my business, Rag and Bone was the obvious choice for the name of my business.

Heather, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My lifelong obsession with record collecting and music is what got me here. I’m fortunate to have been able to turn a passion into a business that I love.
As a shop we focus more on used records than new to be able to offer customers a more affordable option. That is one of the many things that sets us apart from some other bigger shops. Always look for fun new things to bring into the shop. Digging is the best! Records are heavy, that’s the worst. It’s always an adventure.
Our customers are the reason we continue to grow. Without them small businesses can’t succeed. The collectors, the music fans, the people that come just to hang out and talk. They are what makes the job worth it in the end.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
We have many repeat customers that enjoy the atmosphere and size of the shop. It’s small but mighty! As a service we try to help customers find things they have had trouble locating over the years as well as order in specific new items on their wishlists. A little extra touch of customer service goes a long way.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is vital to growing your small business. We post daily to keep customers engaged and go with the idea that natural customer growth works better for us than the possibility of going viral since we are so small. Introduce customer to new music they may not have ever heard, cool art, or a crazy meme. Post fun things and interesting alike so there’s more to look at than just records sometimes.
