We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ian Teeley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
To be fair, I’m noticing lately defining moments are happening more and more. In the beginning, defining moments were non-existent. So much so that it felt like I was navigating through a dark tunnel with nothing but a book of matches. Wet matches, too. So choosing one defining moment feels impossible, but I can choose my most recent one.
Maybe I’m late to the party, but incorporating and prioritizing daily walking has been my most recent defining moment. Adding it to my routine has made me feel like Dorothy going from black and white to color. The key is to ebb and flow the intensity and duration. It moves me closer to my humanity and brings my conditioning into focus. Too often I’ll pay attention to the Strength part of Strength and Conditioning and neglect our lovely friend Conditioning. Which quite frankly feels backwards, because strength can’t necessarily be performed daily, but conditioning can. However, days off are also required from time to time, so let’s not forget about that fact as well.
Every personal training session has cardio time available before or after every session at no additional cost, that way the benefits of walking or biking can be an easier daily accomplishment for every client.

Ian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Sure, my name is Ian Teeley and when I was a child, I fell into a well and had to do pushups at the bottom until I had the strength to climb out myself. Ever since that day, I’ve never looked back and fitness has always been a part of my life, for better or worse.
My services are simple, just good old fashion personal training. That’s not entirely true, I mean I don’t want the potential client to get the impression they’ll be doing nothing but burpees and Turkish getups, What I offer is a place where every type of client with any fitness level can excel and get expert guidance on their form and inject creativity and a well rounded approach to their fitness that addresses every level and layer to a strong body and foundation.
Not to sound cliché but I eat, sleep, and breathe personal training. It’s been my passion for the last ten years and I consider myself someone with experience training every type of person and personality and it’s a task I deeply understand how to perform. Any goal is within reach and it doesn’t matter if someone needs to lose 100 pounds or just wants to stay a size 0, or if someone needs serious corrective training or already has a high fitness level and finds themselves wanting someone to push them past the plateau they’re currently fighting. Regardless of where a client is at, a good personal trainer should be able to jump in and offer real world guidance through anyone’s fitness journey.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Without question. Personal Training is a beautiful thing and I’m wonderfully grateful that it exists.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
You can read every book in the world and know even more than the most sophisticated AI software or ChatGPT ever will and in the end it won’t make a lick of a difference if you forget to become friends with your client.
