We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Natasha Baker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Natasha below.
Natasha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
I definitely think the most important aspect of working with individuals who are entering into counseling, therapy, or other form of healing is establishing boundaries and adhering to them in order to maintain an appropriate relationship. Your clients are vulnerable and you have to be cognizant and respectful of that fact, honoring their boundaries while also honoring your own. Developing attachments can be damaging to the relationship in multiple ways and also makes it hard, as a healer, to not bring your emotional baggage home. I have lost a client to addiction in the past and it absolutely broke me for a very long time.
Natasha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
About five years ago, I was going through some major life changes that led me to seek out a therapist. This decision opened the door for me to a spiritual awakening that changed my life. I dove very deeply into self-healing, through methods such as chakra healing and Reiki, tarot, meditation, and reading every book my therapist recommended to me. I also enrolled in classes to complete certificates in Human Services as well as Chemical Dependency Counseling, which I graduated from last year on the Dean’s list. To help me retain the things I was learning, I started a podcast called How to Be a Better Person, which you can find on Spotify and Apple, where I discuss subjects like attachment styles and boundary setting. About a year later, after some time reading tarot and chakra healing for friends through word of mouth, I decided to dive headfirst into business for myself. It has now been two years of spiritual healing and life coaching, and I am so grateful to every friend and client along the way who has helped to support me and shape my business. I am now also becoming certified as an Emotion Code Practitioner and will be pursuing my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy, and look forward to further refining myself as a multifaceted healer.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
While education will provide you many necessary tools to navigate working in human services or healthcare, experience helps to build empathy, compassion, and an understanding of working with all types of different individuals. I’ve worked as a Floor Counselor at an inpatient treatment facility for youth with eating disorders, as well as interned at several addictions rehabilitation centers. Getting to meet so many people with various struggles and never-ending stories is a very humbling and eye-opening job. Those who struggle with putting themselves in someone else’s shoes need not apply.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Authenticity and transparency. I always want the best for my clients and aim to do my job to the best of my ability, even if it means sometimes I’m telling them something that is difficult to hear — but energy doesn’t lie, and I won’t either.
