Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Fallon Honeycutt. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Fallon, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
My business partner Gregg Smith and I started this company in 2020, but I didn’t go full time until 2025. Something that I’m glad I did was I’m grateful we started the company when we did, and I’m glad I waited to go full time, as I was able to get experience under my belt that I needed to be prepared for the struggles of business ownership. We started on March 5, 2020, this is right in the beginning of Covid, in Reno NV. I was from the area and very well connect in the trucking industry so I knew we would be successful; we just needed to keep trucking along. We started the company by purchasing an end dump trailer and renting a truck, after 3 months we were able to buy our first truck. After about a year, we added 1 more truck and 3 months after that we bought a third truck. So, in a span of 1.5 years we had 3 trucks running, we hauled trash, boulders and general freight. We did have our struggles, including 2 engine replacements and a major accident where we were hit by a DUI. All this happened in the middle of Covid and where I had to move to Lebanon, TN for my husband’s career. We continued to operate in Reno until June of 2023 when we made the decision to move the company to Lebanon, TN. This was a huge blessing. We started by hauling metal for about 6 months until we were able to scale up and secure agreements in the trash industry. We think 2025 will be our best year yet as we currently have 8 trucks running daily and have large opportunities ahead of us.
The only thing I would change about my experience or lack of experience is no one really tells you how to prepare for scaling up and how much your relationships matter with banking outfits.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve been in the trucking industry since I was 19 years old… 20 years ago… I also have 12 years of experience in the trash business including special waste and hazardous waste. I’ve managed small and large trucking companies and been on the sales side managing large contracts and large natural disasters. I didn’t plan to get into the garbage industry; I just fell in love with it. I love how we can make a difference as individuals and how we can leave a better world for future generations. We just have to be willing to work together.
I’m most proud that we’ve created a business for myself and business partner, where we offer a very niche hauling service for environmental customers. They need us just as much as we need them and they know we will do everything right along the way. We take pride in our equipment and our employees. We want them to be a part of something bigger than ourselves, and we are on the path to do it.
We are also developing a household hazardous waste program for individuals that need to dispose of items that should not go in the general trash. For example, proper disposal of batteries, light bulbs, paint, electronics and so much more. We hope to launch this program by the end of 2025. We also offer consultive services for any environmental need including general recycling or trash management for businesses, LEED and any special waste disposal that people need help with.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I was able to pull out money from my 401k to purchase equipment and give us cash flow to cover operating cost for about 6 months. We have also been able to work with our bank to offer lines of credit, we also only use one company for our equipment financing. Relationships are key when it comes to asking for money.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve always worked for very large corporations and had to adapt to their management style and corporate demands. I had to unlearn how to manage people. I’m not saying all large corporations are bad, they do a lot of good. However, I love that I can have a genuine relationship with my team and that their efforts really matter to me and my family. I am truly grateful for every person that we work with, not just my drives but also my customers, they were willing to take a leap of faith for me, and I will work hard to make sure they are truly valued as individuals.
