Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alia Aubry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Alia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I really liked the idea of creating something out of scratch. Taking a few ingredients & making something that people would rave about & enjoy has always been my dream.
I made That Creole Baker on the premise of family. I grew up in a big family, and every time there was a function, even if we hadn’t seen each other in a while, it always felt like home. I wanted each & every one of my ‘Beignets’ to feel like they were talking to family when they ordered from me.
My slogan “Southern hospitality in every bite” alludes to my paternal Creole heritage. Not only did I want my pastries to taste great, I wanted them to look amazing. Too many times have customers told me that they received a cute cake or beautiful cookies & taste or texture turn out subpar. I figure, if you’re going to have your cake, you should enjoy eating it too.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve loved food ever since I could cook. I started cooking with my mom around elementary school age, roughly age 7.
It wasn’t until middle school where I fell in love with baking! I learned that my mama used to bake on the side as she took care of my brothers when they were younger. I inherited some tools from her, heavily watched Food Network & How To Cake It & the rest is history!
I started That Creole Baker in 2019 at the ripe age of 18, not knowing anything about business, but I knew I wanted to get my product out there to be enjoyed by the masses. I built it on the basis of family, because I want everyone who interacts with my business to feel welcome. I make each & every dessert with care & detail, ensuring that the customer will enjoy every bite!
A couple years back, I was lucky to participate in VoyageLA’s Hidden Gems interview. I talked about how I started my business & it attracted many new customers for me. Throughout the years, I’ve constructed wedding cakes, hosted cake classes & was even featured in a wedding magazine for Temecula.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I sell on my own website curated through Wix/Square! I started on Wix, but switched to Squarespace earlier this year. It’s been a journey learning about SEO, analytics & everything tech. I wouldn’t say I’m a boomer when it comes to technology, but I’m not the savviest! I really liked that you could build your own website through both sites & how customizable & personable you could get with your brand to cater to the right customers.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I can’t count how many times I’ve “ghosted” social media & come back again with a new hunger for creating content. I love what I do, and sometimes it gets overwhelming and I need to take a step back. Whether it’s from school or mental health issues, there’s always something holding me back. But I always find a way to come back to it. I find myself stuck in ruts, yes, but whenever I put myself out there & share content, I feel at home.
