We recently connected with Leslie Phu and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Leslie, thanks for joining us today. Looking back at internships and apprenticeships can be interesting, because there is so much variety in people’s experiences – and often those experiences inform our own leadership style. Do you have an interesting story from that stage of your career that you can share with us?
The first time that I witnessed Neuro-emotional technique at Terrain Wellness in Portland, Oregon was the day that I realized I had found what I was looking for in practicing medicine. Not only was Dr. Dani able to work on infants and adults alike, but school-aged children were also in awe of the identification of their hidden emotions using this modality.
For the first 4.5 years working on my masters and doctorate, I didn’t realize that I had also been searching for this niche key to healing in alternative medicine. Out of the many modalities that I had witnessed in many clinical offices, Neuro-Emotional Technique had finally re-sparked the flame that had become hidden under all the stress of books and exams. I remembered why I was here. From that one modality, it had bloomed into many modalities and now I can confidently say that I love what I do and I love my job!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a board certified naturopathic doctor and have a masters in acupuncture with a speciality in Chinese herbal medicine. I work with anything from sprains/strains to chronic mysterious ailments, autoimmune, mold, lyme, and heavy metal exposures, infertility. Alongside all, I address mental health.
Through the nervous system, I ask the body what it needs to heal with the use of manual muscle testing. In this way, I help to remind people how to trust and how to listen to their bodies. I help awaken the immune system to be able to heal itself and help to rewrite new patterned ways of living by shifting core beliefs.
I found alternative medicine because I felt that my issues in health were unresolved by western medicine. I have always had a fascination with the human body and healthcare but when I decided to ditch western medicine, it left me with a long journey of searching. After many months of traveling and looking for the next place to become educated, I finally found Portland, OR. A place saturated with alternative health practitioners and a couple of well-known natural medical schools!
I feel very lucky and grateful to have a practice that has a steady flow of new patients. Thanks to this, I don’t have to adapt a “business” model. My goal isn’t to keep people coming back, it’s to get people better. Even though the clinic has only been open for a little over a year, we have made leaps and bounds for the health of our local community. What I am most proud of is that I get to treat one patient and then they refer their child, their spouse, their mother, their best friend, their coworker, and even strangers that they meet on the street. It is such an honor to be trusted and to be able to witness the healing of each individual. The best part about this medicine is that I work to remove reliance on medications and then substitute that with one’s own vital force of health. This medicine is a true blessing and gift from God!
Another really fun thing with what I do is that I’m constantly learning from each individual body. Sure, there’s continuing education and books, but the muscle testing humbles me with almost every single person I work with. I am fascinated when each body chooses its own combination of healing modalities and how quickly I get to witness improvements or lack-there-of based on the life choices of each person.
In western medicine there are those with a medical diagnoses and those who are “healthy.” The biggest question is “what about the people in-between?” So many people have exhausted funds and energy searching for a diagnosis that they never fully fit into, and with ongoing symptoms that never seem to fully resolve. Fortunately, this medicine doesn’t require boxes to fit into because symptoms and root causes are treated regardless of nomenclature.
I think the biggest aspect of why this medicine is so powerful is because we work on the emotional level. Every aspect of the human body is controlled by the central nervous system which is ultimately a balance between the conscious sympathetic/parasympathetic and the subconscious autonomic nervous system. How wonderful it is to have a tool that can tap into all of it! Not only that, but we take out most of the guess-work by asking the body what it wants or needs.
What makes my practice unique is that I have a Classical Chinese medicine perspective added to the German-rooted Naturopathic theories alongside the modern conventional knowledge. It is so fun to blend the ancient study of nature’s patterns overlayed in the human body with the slightly more modern natural medicines and the completely new theories of conventional medicine.
The clinic that I work at is called Yin Fire Holistic Health and it’s located in the heart of Georgetown, KY. I offer acupuncture and emotional clearing sessions as well as holistic and functional health appointments. You can find more information at yinfireholistichealth.com or send the clinic phone number a call or text.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
It’s really important to be able to quickly build rapport and trust with strangers. Patients are coming in and are mostly paying out-of-pocket for their health, one must feel safe and taken care of. This medicine is so different than most people have ever experienced, so it is also important that the practitioner truly believes in their medicine.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that doctors know everything. Somehow we have been brainwashed to blindly listen to recommendations by those in white coats, but conventional medicine is so young. My naturopathic education trained us to be primary care practitioners who are accepted by many insurance companies. I learned that there are a lot of gaps in understanding how the human body actually works. There are so many different types of doctors out there and we all should learn to advocate for ourselves, especially because we know our bodies best.
