Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Hill. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Brittany thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
Yes, I’m definitely happy being a business owner. I’ve always been someone who thrives on independence, and there’s something really fulfilling about being my own boss, setting my own standards, and running things the way I believe they should be done. On top of that, I genuinely love what I do. There are so many days when I completely forget it’s even “work” because it just feels like second nature to me.
That said, I’d be lying if I said the thought of a “regular” job never crosses my mind. I think most business owners can relate to those occasional moments where the pressure piles on— it can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to balance your work with family life. Even though I do set my own hours, I have a really hard time saying no. And it’s not because I feel like I have to say yes, it’s because I truly love what I do, and if I have the space, I want to make it happen for someone.
There was actually a very recent moment where I felt pulled in literally all directions—back-to-back clients, messages flooding in and piling up, plus trying to be present for my family. I remember thinking over and over again, “Would it be easier if I just had a job where I clocked in and out, left the work at work, and didn’t carry so much of it on my shoulders, especially at home?” But the truth is, I know I wouldn’t be happy. Doing makeup is therapeutic for me. The connections I build with my clients—the laughter, the trust, the real friendships that form… are what truly fuels my passion. Those moments of joy and genuine connection are what keep me grounded and remind me why I do this.
So sure, I absolutely have those “Is this feasible?” or “Am I missing too much at home?” moments. But I’ve never had like a just “give it all up” moment. And deep down, I know I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

Brittany, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As already stated— My name is Brittany Hill! I’m a professional makeup artist based in Arkansas, specializing in bridal and glam makeup. To be honest, I actually never planned to be in this industry— in high school, before college, some friends randomly asked me to do their makeup, and while I thought it was a crazy ask considering I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, I just kept saying sure! What started out as just being silly and playing in makeup at sleepovers… slowly turned into a passion that will more than likely last a lifetime.
But— After leaving college due to personal circumstances, my aunt steadily encouraged me to pursue makeup professionally. I did enroll at a local cosmetology school but was told I’d never make it in this industry because I wasn’t “put together” enough. That moment absolutely shifted everything for me. I promised myself that I’d never let appearance define any kind of worth—I always try to remind others of that, too.
Since leaving cosmetology school in December of 2017, I’ve worked incredibly hard to build my business from the ground up. I became full-time halfway into 2020, and just in the past few years, I’m honored to say that I’ve been published in several magazines, worked New York Fashion Week, and had my work featured on Getty Images. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished—but I’m even more proud of all of the incredible relationships I’ve built through this work.
I firmly believe in creating a space where people feel comfortable, seen, and celebrated. Glam is what I do, it’s what I absolutely love, but the connections are at the heart of everything—whether it’s with my clients in the chair or the amazing community of artists and stylists I’ve met along the way. I’ve built real, genuine friendships in this industry, and I’m so grateful for the support, collaboration, and inspiration we all share together. I pour my heart and soul into every appointment and conversation I have and always ask myself, “How can I make their experience even better next time?” or “What can I do to make my presence more of a positive experience?”. Im always looking for ways to grow, learn, and inspire. I’m honestly so proud of how far I’ve come in the past 10 years alone, but I know this is really just the beginning—and that’s probably the most exciting part!

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Honestly? The most effective thing has been just being myself. Being transparent, open, and human. Yes, of course I’m a business owner and a professional, but I don’t and will never try to act like I’m ever above anyone—I truly deeply connect with people. When you build genuine relationships, those clients are the ones who turn around and recommend you to the people they care about most. It’s never just about the makeup—it’s about how you make someone feel. When clients feel seen and valued, they want others to experience that too!
Another key piece is setting boundaries. Being human also means protecting your peace and creating balance between personal and work life. Surprisingly, I’ve had clients thank me for having clear policies—they really appreciate the structure and the respect it creates on both sides. When you’re firm but kind, it builds trust and shows you’re serious about your craft and their experience.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Oh boy—there have definitely been a lot of lessons over the years. But one of the biggest (and probably most relatable) was learning that less is more. I’ve always been a glam artist, but there was a time in my career when I was a *very*… very glam artist. I wouldn’t say I had a heavy hand, but let’s just say… I loved putting the makeup on! To be fair, it was totally on-trend at the time—everyone was into the bold and defined pomade brows, the colorful and glittery lids, sharp contour, and blinding highlight. The face wasn’t exactly meant to look natural; it was definitely meant to make a statement!
But, as I started doing more bridal makeup, the shift in some requests became quite clear. Clients wanted something softer, more minimal, more neutral. At first, I felt stuck—do I change my style or just stick to what I know? But I chose to listen. I took the feedback and slowly adjusted, learning to tweak my technique without losing my entire artistic identity.
It definitely took time (and maybe a few trial-and-error moments), but I eventually realized: it’s so much easier to add than it is to take away. Those moments didn’t just change my technique—it literally changed the entire experience that I have come to provide today!
