We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jourdan Taylore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jourdan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The mission behind Jourdan Taylore is simple yet radical: to change the stigma around Black natural hair.
Historically, African American women began wearing weaves and chemically treating our hair not out of preference—but out of survival. During the rise of mass incarceration, as Black men were stripped from their homes and communities, Black women were forced into the workforce in larger numbers. In the workforce, our natural hair was seen as unprofessional, untamed, and limited our opportunities. So, we conformed. We covered our hair, chemically altered it, and slowly distanced ourselves from our God-given beauty in order to provide for our families and simply exist in predominantly white spaces. Decades later, we are still living in the ramifications of conforming. So many young Black girls grow up disliking their hair, feeling self-conscious about it, or never truly feeling beautiful in their most natural state.
That’s why this mission means everything to me. Jourdan Taylore is not just a hair care line—it’s a ministry. A movement. A love letter to that little Black girl in each of us who was never taught to love her natural features. It’s a declaration that our hair is not a problem to fix but a crown to embrace. Through my products, I want Black women and men to fall in love with their natural hair—and, in doing so, fall deeper in love with themselves. I want to dismantle the Eurocentric beauty standards that have taught us to shrink, hide, and adjust who we are to be accepted. I want to rewrite the narrative that our hair is nappy, dirty, or unkempt. My brand is rooted in self-love, healing, and a deep commitment to honoring who God created us to be—fearfully and wonderfully made.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Jourdan, a licensed therapist, herbalist, and the founder of Jourdan Taylore Hair Care.
I handcraft 100% natural hair care products, launching with my signature Medicinal Hair Elixir—which has sold out four times! This product is unique in the market because of my infusion process. I’ve developed my own cold infusion method, where I steep oils in herbs for a full eight weeks before draining the herbs and bottling the final product. This creates an extremely potent formula that my customers love. While my Medicinal Hair Elixir is formulated for kinky, coily, and curly hair, herbalism truly doesn’t discriminate—anyone looking to improve their hair health can benefit. I’ve helped customers struggling with postpartum hair loss, thinning, shedding, edge regrowth, beard filling, seborrheic dermatitis, and more.
My journey began as a teenager, fueled by a deep passion for herbalism and Ayurvedic practices. I started making my own hair products, and when my hair began to flourish, friends and family started asking me to make products for them. Through that process, I noticed a common issue—many Black women felt self-conscious about their natural hair and were often left in the dark about how to properly care for it. I attribute this to the lack of representation in the beauty industry and the scarcity of products made specifically for our unique hair textures. That realization sparked a new purpose in me—not just to help Black women embrace their natural hair as beautiful, but to create a community that reflects the representation I longed for growing up.
What I’m most proud of isn’t just the product, my growth as a business, or the results my customers see—it’s the thriving community I’ve built. I witness Black women uplifting one another daily, sharing hair secrets, remedies, and education. Jourdan Taylore is a safe space where Black women feel heard, represented, and beautiful. Lastly, I want everyone who connects with my brand to feel and experience that safe space, and to grow in their faith alongside their hair journey. As a therapist, this brand represents a deeply personal mission: to guide my customers on a self-healing journey rooted in radical self-love, empowerment, and God’s grace.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I hope that throughout this interview, it’s been clear that my brand is not just a business—it’s truly a ministry. I’m a faith-based therapist with a passion for herbalism, and my brand, Jourdan Taylore, is the place where all of those callings intersect.
I stay in touch with my customers organically. One of the main ways I do this is through my email series, Mental Health Monday, where I send out weekly emails discussing mental health topics that are relevant to the Black community. These emails are from the heart and grounded in my professional work as a therapist. I believe this resonates with my audience because I’m not just a brand asking for their support—I’m providing real value, encouragement, and education that supports their overall well-being.
Additionally, as a faith-based brand, I started another weekly email series called Word Wednesday, where I share personal devotionals. Like everything I do, this also flows organically from who I am and what I believe. It allows me to show up fully, minister to my audience, and be in community with people beyond just product transactions.
I foster brand loyalty by simply being myself—sharing what God has placed on my heart, offering my talents freely, and creating a safe space that extends beyond beauty. My customers can feel the difference because my mission is rooted in authenticity, service, and passion.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I truly owe my entire business—and all its current and future success—to my business partner. They’ve been with me every single step of the way. In fact, they’re the one who placed this idea on my heart years ago. I didn’t believe any of this was possible for me, but everything changed when I stopped relying on my own strength and surrendered my passions to His ability instead of mine.
If you haven’t guessed it by now, my business partner is my Savior—Jesus Christ.
God is at the center of everything I do in my business. He is my partner in every part of this journey, and I want Him to get all the glory. I truly wouldn’t be where I am without Him.
I want to encourage any entrepreneurs—or future entrepreneurs—reading this: hand your business over to God. Let Him carry the weight. Let Him lead. Trust me—God is the best business partner you could ever have.
