We were lucky to catch up with Alexus Castillo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexus, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My Mission… Creative Authenticity!
I not only get your basic photos but I try to have fun and bring your personality into it. I want to capture all the little details. I want my clients to remember everything about our time together and this moment we are capturing in their lives.
When I started photography, I thought I wanted to be a commercial and editorial photographer but about a two years ago, I fell in love with shooting… LOVE. Shooting couples and weddings and families is definitely where my passion lies. It makes me feel like a little kid again in the best way.
Ive always had a love for both photojournalism and editorial photography. When starting my business and creating my mission I know wanted to merge the two and stay true to what I love.

Alexus, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Ever since I was little, I always had a camera in hand, whether it was on a phone, a disposable or when I got older a film camera. At the age of 15, my mom’s best friend got me my first DSLR camera and it was the end game there. I fell in love with everything photography. In high school, I began to take photography classes and joined the yearbook team. I gave my all. My junior year of High school is when it all really became real I dove into my creative side and did a national competition called Scholastic. I actually became a final contender and got to go to New York for my work. When I got back, I found out I was going to be the next year’s head photography editor for my yearbook team. The amount of excitement I had was insane.
Photography to me has always been more than clicking a button, editing some photos and sending them off. It’s capturing a moment in time and telling a story. It’s creating friendships and bonds that you can live with forever and never forget. That is what I want to fully translate into your experience with me in our sessions together. I want to be more than just the photographer you hired, I want to be your friend, your hype girl, and then also of course capture you in your most “you” state so you can cherish these moments for years and years to come.
When you hire me as your photographer I am going to be fully invested in you and making his experience something you will never forget! My favorite thing to hear from my couples after a session is that they felt like models and that they can’t believe they were ever nervous!
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
It’s so crazy how my high school side-hustle DID turn into my full time job. In high school, I always had a camera in my hand since I was in yearbook and photography. I eventually started to take all my friends photos mainly for social media and then my senior year it turned into doing senior photos for a bunch of friends to save up money for a new camera and a car! I eventually started to go to meets to really further my craft and get better! After high school I actually took a break until an old friend reached out for some photos because she got engaged and then from then on… everything changed. When I posted those all the inquiries for couples and weddings started to come in and it became, me, I guess you could say.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative is definitely knowing that people hire me because of my style and ultimately just being me. I get to capture peoples milestones in my creative style and vision and they trust me. That is so rewarding.
