We were lucky to catch up with Alex Ceban recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
Before talking about what it takes to be successful, one must know what success is in the first place. So ask yourself this question: what does being successful mean to you? It’s important to have your own answer to this question. If you let your surrounding environment determine it for you, you are risking wasting a lifetime chasing things that are important to other people instead of following your own dreams.
For example, society may tell you that having an ultra expensive sports car, owning a mega yacht, shopping at luxurious stores or owning a penthouse in New York or Paris equals success. Arguably, most people would look at all of that and say “yes, this person is successful”. But for me personally, success means being able to do things that I love and that has little to do with yachts and luxury brands.
So what I suggest you do to become successful, is to sit down and make a list of things you want to be able to do and have. But while making the list I invite you to seek the answers from your heart and ignore any external influence. Find out what truly makes you happy. Maybe it’s being able to go skiing or surfing every weekend, or having a car that would allow you to reach most remote mountain sites because you love to spend the time in nature so much. Maybe instead of having a big condo in a city, you’d rather own a cabin in the woods because you value peace and privacy.
Find the way to reach these goals by doing something you love and is meaningful to you. I think it’s so much easier to be incredibly good at doing something you are deeply passionate about. To me, finding the way to make a living by doing what you love is success on its own.
Alex, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I quit bartending and I got into personal training because I wanted to help people become healthier instead of poisoning them with alcohol. Since then I’ve been coaching for many years and I love it so much. I enjoy helping people improve their lives on so many levels. Plus I get to meet really interesting and just good people, and sometimes I feel like I learn more from them than they do from me.
I’ve carved myself a niche in fitness – I focus exclusively on calisthenics. I know how to get virtually anyone to do pull ups, push ups, pistol squats, handstands and other more advanced bodyweight skills. But what I’m really proud of is to have built a team of incredible coaches at Caprǎ. These amazing people are helping me spread the knowledge about calisthenics which I’m very grateful for. Arash, Thomas and Matt in Denver, Ahmed and Joshua in New York City, Cade in Seattle – I’m so fortunate to work with you! Because of these individuals we are able to offer high level service to so many people.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
At Caprǎ, we treat every client that trains with us with respect and professionalism. We do our very best to gain as much knowledge as possible to help people reach their wildest fitness dreams. We never offer a cookie cutter workout of the day and instead every single session is tailored to each individual’s goals and needs even in our group sessions. We constantly seek our clients’ feedback to find ways to improve and we have our own values to guide us.
We are not really seeking to build a reputation within the fitness industry. What we really care about is helping our clients reach their goals and we don’t care that much about what the outsiders think of us. I think our clients appreciate this approach very much.
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
At Caprǎ our only focus is calisthenics. We strive to be absolute experts in this field and I believe that adding other revenue streams would cause us to get distracted from our core service.
We don’t sell supplements or protein shakes, we don’t try to diversify and offer weightlifting or yoga at our studio even though we could. Instead, we have a laser focus on calisthenics and I believe this helps us be very good at what we do.
