Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Buu G. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Buu, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The first full album I produced was ‘Smokehouse’ by Kaleidoscope Records. I had been working with their CEO and main artist Grandmaster Shogun for about a year when he proposed the idea to me. That idea being a feel good classic hip-hop album for stoners to smoke to, accented by it’s 70’s soul samples and groovy drums. Shogun wanted it to be a collective album, as most of the artists on the Kaleidoscope roster ended up being featured on it. 13 tracks, including an intro, interlude, multiple skits and a memorable outro that properly highlighted the theme of the record. Some of my favorite tracks on the record include High Rolla, The Culture, and Big Smoke Society. This record is very meaningful to me because these beats are some of my personal favorites from my beat vault and I feel like every song was given its proper justice by all the artists that are featured on them. If you like 70’s soul & funk, smoking weed, or just listening to music that makes you feel good, I highly recommend giving ‘Smokehouse’ a spin.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Buu G outta Long Island, New York and I produce hip-hop music, representing TomKat SocialKlub. I got my start as a drummer and spent most of my adult life drumming in hardcore/metalcore bands. After spending time on the road touring in various bands, I realized that despite how much I love performing, I work best alone and prefer to make music on my own time, so I started producing beats. A hip-hop lover since I was a child, I remember hearing quick clips of 90’s classics on the radio as my parents were flipping through the stations and begging them to go back to them. I started buying CD’s as soon as I had my own money, grabbing classics like ‘Get Rich or Die Trying,’ ‘The Black Album,’ and ‘College Dropout’ in my early teens. I believe my wide range of musical experience helps me craft a unique sound in an oversaturated industry, and my passion for making music allows me to create in a free space with no pressure to achieve certain goals or milestones as an artist. I make music I enjoy because I enjoy making music. I also am a self-taught engineer, with an experienced portfolio of work as a Recording and Mixing engineer. The work I am most proud of is ‘Smokehouse’ by Kaleidoscope records, as I produced and mixed all 13 songs on the album. The TomKat SocialKlub brand was founded by ShyneTheProject and myself, and it is a young and up-and-coming hip-hop label outta Long Island, New York. We just successfully hosted our first annual TomKat Fest on June 28th, featuring artist like P-Trill, Global Degenerates & TheKid Jet as well as bands including Ill Niño, Newcomer & Bore. For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
That’s an easy question. Playing the song back for the first time once its finished.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My social media audience is mostly organic. Like I stated before I’ve spent a lot of time playing in many bands, so a lot of my audience is the people I’ve met along the way at all the shows I’ve played in various states. The rest of my audience is people tapped into the underground New York Hip-Hop scene that I’ve been introduced to at various events the last 2-3 years. I’m not much of a content creator, I prefer to let my music speak for itself. If people think it’s good, they’ll tell others.
