We recently connected with Colleen Bauer and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Colleen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for Fairy Godmother Events was born out of both encouragement and a deep passion for helping people feel calm and cared for during important moments. Years ago, I had the honor of serving as Chairperson for the Bakersfield Women’s Business Conference. After planning such a large, detailed event, I received a wave of compliments from fellow committee members and event partners. Many of them said, “You should really consider doing this professionally.” At the time, I didn’t think much of it, but the seed was planted.
Shortly after, friends and family began asking me to help with weddings and special events. I realized that what felt natural to me—bringing order to chaos, thinking ten steps ahead, calming nerves, and adding thoughtful details—was something not everyone could do, or at least not with joy. I kept seeing a gap: people were overwhelmed by what should be one of the happiest days of their lives, and many needed a guiding hand to make things go smoothly. That’s when I knew—this was more than a side passion, it was a calling.
What made me most excited was the idea of being someone’s “fairy godmother.” Not just a planner or coordinator, but someone who could sprinkle a little magic, step in when needed, and truly care about each moment. I wasn’t just offering a service—I was offering peace of mind, kindness, and a calming presence when it mattered most.
From the beginning, I knew this would work because it came from the heart. I was solving a problem that went beyond logistics: couples needed someone they could trust, someone who would treat their wedding day with the same love and intention they did. That belief still drives me today.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi there! I’m Colleen Bauer, owner and lead planner at Fairy Godmother Events, where we specialize in planning, designing, and executing beautifully curated events—from heartfelt weddings to polished corporate experiences.
Before founding Fairy Godmother, I had a successful career in the banking industry, where I developed a strong foundation in professionalism, organization, and client care. But I always felt drawn to creativity and connection, especially when helping friends and family bring their special moments to life. That passion turned into purpose after I served as Chairperson for the Bakersfield Women’s Business Conference. I loved every minute of organizing that event, and the positive feedback I received sparked a realization: I had the skills and heart to turn this into something more.
In 2010, Fairy Godmother Events was born. What started with weddings has grown into a company known for transforming chaos into calm and visions into reality. Today, we focus on full-scale planning, thoughtful design, and seamless execution for both weddings and corporate events. Whether it’s a romantic vineyard wedding or a high-impact company celebration, our goal is always the same: to create meaningful, memorable experiences for our clients and their guests.
What sets us apart is our signature blend of creativity, kindness, and professionalism. We care deeply about our clients and take pride in crafting events that reflect who they are and what they value. My background in banking gave me the structure and discipline to manage the moving pieces, while my passion for storytelling and design helps us create events that truly feel magical.
I’m most proud of the relationships we build. Many of our clients become lifelong friends, and we often hear things like, “You made us feel so taken care of,” or “We actually got to enjoy our event because of you.” That’s what it’s all about for me—helping people feel confident, supported, and celebrated.
If you’re planning a wedding, corporate event, or any special gathering, Fairy Godmother Events would love to be your trusted partner in making it unforgettable.
Have you ever had to pivot?
In 2020, like so many in the wedding industry, we were faced with sudden cancellations, uncertainty, and heartbroken couples. But even as large events were put on hold, I believed love didn’t have to be.
That’s when we created our Micro Wedding Strategy—a way for couples to still celebrate safely, beautifully, and meaningfully. We designed intimate weddings with all the thoughtful details of a full event, just on a smaller scale. From custom timelines to curated vendor teams, we handled everything to ensure these celebrations felt just as magical.
This pivot not only kept our business going—it reignited our passion. It reminded us that what truly matters isn’t the guest count, but the love at the center of it all. And that heart-first mindset continues to shape how we serve our clients today.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Our reputation has been built on one simple but powerful principle: take care of people. At Fairy Godmother Events, we work hard to support not just our clients but also their families, guests, and the incredible team of event professionals we collaborate with. We believe in showing up with kindness, professionalism, and a willingness to go above and beyond—every single time.
Consistency has also played a huge role. We’re committed to delivering a high level of service at every event, no matter the size or budget. And we stay grounded and humble, always learning, always listening, and always remembering that this work is a privilege.
At the end of the day, people remember how you made them feel—and we strive to make every person we interact with feel valued, respected, and cared for.
