We recently connected with Mickey Liu and have shared our conversation below.
Mickey, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
My inspiration for opening Zing Bungee Fitness came from a desire to redefine what fitness can be. I’ve always been passionate about movement and well-being, but I also recognized that traditional workouts can become monotonous or even feel inaccessible to some. When I discovered bungee fitness, I was captivated by its unique blend of exhilarating movement, low-impact benefits, and incredible full-body workout.
San Diego, with its vibrant and active community, felt like the perfect place to introduce this innovative fitness experience. People here are open to new ideas and prioritize their health, and I saw a real need for a fun, effective, and joint-friendly alternative to conventional exercise. I wanted to create a space where people could challenge themselves, rediscover joy in movement, and feel truly uplifted – literally and figuratively!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a former Chinese gymnast and World Champion in Acro-Gymnastics, and my life has been dedicated to fitness for the past 30 years. After my competitive career, I transitioned into teaching, specializing today in pilates and bungee fitness.
At Zing Bungee Fitness, we offer a unique, low-impact, high-intensity full-body workout that lets you literally defy gravity, solving the common problem of needing an effective, fun workout that’s gentle on joints. What truly sets us apart is my deep experience and energetic, individualized approach – I’m incredibly proud of the joyful community we’ve built, proving that fitness can be an exhilarating, empowering, and incredibly fun experience for every body.

How’d you meet your business partner?
It’s actually a wonderful story of how serendipity and necessity brought my co-founder, Celine, into the Zing Bungee Fitness family. When we first launched, I was incredibly passionate about the unique fitness experience we offered, but as a first-generation immigrant, I faced a significant hurdle: I wasn’t familiar with the intricacies of local marketing and how to truly attract a broad customer base here in San Diego. I tried posting some class video clips on social media, but they just weren’t getting the traction we needed to fill our classes.
Then Celine walked into one of our early bungee fitness classes. She was a customer, and after experiencing the exhilaration of the workout, she approached me with a very direct question about our marketing efforts. Before I knew it, she was pitching herself, brimming with ideas on how to help us grow. Celine came from the tech industry with a wealth of knowledge in digital marketing tactics, and it quickly became clear she was exactly what we needed. At that time, we didn’t even have a proper website for class schedules or booking. Celine took charge, building our entire website from scratch and creating professional social media accounts to expand our online presence. Most crucially, she made us discoverable on Google Maps and built our Google Business Profile, making us visible to countless potential customers searching for local fitness options. These foundational elements she established are now the backbone of our customer acquisition and the core growth engine for Zing Bungee Fitness. It’s safe to say, meeting Celine was a game-changer.

Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
This is a fantastic question, and it immediately brings to mind a pivotal moment in our early marketing journey. Just two months after we launched our website, ClassPass approached us. We saw the potential for exposure, but soon realized their “first-time user, first month free” policy meant we weren’t getting paid for many of the new clients filling our classes. I distinctly remember one class with nine free ClassPass users – it was far more than committed, and seeing our spots filled without revenue felt like the odds were stacked against our new business.
We knew we had to act. It felt risky, but we scheduled a meeting with their representative and firmly demanded a change to their algorithm. To our immense relief, they listened and adjusted their system. This negotiation transformed ClassPass from a potential drain into a valuable and consistent channel for attracting new customers, proving that advocating for our business was a risk well worth taking.
