Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to James Abyss. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, James thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
In grade school I used to draw dinosaurs and comic book characters for lunch money, and sometimes I’d get a little extra if I didn’t sign the art. I’d let someone else claim the artwork, and I’d have money for extra stuff at lunch time. I feel like that was when it really clicked for me, and I still usually grab a little snack after I sell a painting!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Prior to becoming a full time artist, I actually worked as a supervisor in a corporate setting! The money was good, but I could feel that I wasn’t being true to myself, so I cashed out my 401k and invested in art supplies and a bit of a cushion, just in case, and never looked back. I feel like, aside from my art itself, I’m most proud of being able to be a father first. Also it’s nice to never worry about getting fired for being too authentic in a social setting.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I definitely had to unlearn a few things. I was very much a perfectionist and a creature of habit prior to focusing on art. I do feel like those aspects of my personality are still very useful some of the time, but sometimes the art needs to lead you to where it’s going.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Share! It’s free. Recommend your artist friends instead of mass produced, soulless department store stuff. The absolute majority of my sales come from repeat business and word of mouth. There are many great undiscovered artists out there, and many conversations to be had.
