We were lucky to catch up with Rebekah Faith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebekah, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Well my parents have always loved music – my Mom listens to many genres, and she specifically loves 70s-90s country like Don Williams, Allison Krauss, and Reba McCentire, and then my dad loves a lot of older rock and roll like Bob Seger and The Eagles, and also 2000’s alt rock, like Bowling For Soup. Both of them also love indie/folk music, SO we’re always listening to music, and we always have been. Music has been in my life since the beginning, so it’s truly apart of who I am. I’ve had this passion for singing since I was younger, and I would sing “Big Green Tractor” by Jason Aldean, while dancing on our dining room bench. It was great, so funny, and we have videos of that! I would also sit front row during my mom’s choir practice at church, and sing along with them. So, it wasn’t a specific moment in time, or realization that told me what I wanted to do, but just a growing love for music, and I’ve always really wanted to make people feel the way I feel when I listen to music. It’s a feeling that’s indescribably joyous and vibrant with life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello! My name is Rebekah Faith, and I am an independent musician/singer/songwriter. I play music at various events and locations around the Charleston and Mount Pleasant area! I’m currently arranging a little tour along the coast this summer to let people hear my music. So, I will post those locations soon, and I encourage you to join in on the fun! If you’d like to give a listen to my music, I have a song called Filing Cabinet out on all streaming services, and I’m also working on a song right now with a friend of mine, so stay tuned for that!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There are really so many rewarding aspects to being an artist. I feel so happy and adventurous just sitting in the studio creating music, and I love when people tell me that they enjoyed my music, or that it moved them, or made them feel something, because I just love how music can change someone’s personality, perspective, and life. I really do love that. At my shows and local gigs, I feel so happy when people come up to me, and tell me they’ve liked my performance! When people do that, I just hope that they remember me, and that moment, so that when I do release even more music, they would listen and follow along on my journey!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
It’s not necessarily a lesson, but a mindset. When I was younger, I used to think that to release music and build a supportive audience that I would have to be found or picked up my a label, but that is so backwards. After reading about my favorite musician’s stories, I’ve found that one has to already release music, build a community, and work on the craft (or obsession with music), in order to even be found. This is something that I will always be working towards, and because of that I’ve really fallen in love with the process of making a song, and putting everything into place.
