We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Harley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Harley below.
Harley, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Being a hairstylist and an online content creator you want to make people feel beautiful- that is your job, but the mission isn’t just to make people feel better about their appearance. Everyday I get to show people the love of God through me whether that be posting an inspirational video, talking to a client about issues with her husband, picking up groceries for someone. I want to make everyone feel loved and appreciated. I get to help people feel better and give a listening ear. Sometimes a new haircut can make people feel just a slight bit better when life at home is like waves crashing constantly and you can’t swim up. So the mission is to make everyone feel heard, loved, and accepted.
Harley, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Harley McNairn and I’m currently 17 years old in the beauty industry. I’ve known I’ve wanted to be a hairstylist since I was 7 years old. Going to the salon with my Aunt Amber and talking to her hairdresser, Anne, was one of the main reasons I decided this career. I’m also a high school student going into my senior year of high school. You have to have a lot of discipline when managing life. Something important I was once told is, “It’s not about motivation it’s about discipline.” This quote stuck with me to push myself harder everyday. I provide many services such as blonding, coloring, cutting, facials, etc…anything beauty I love! I focus on the quality of the products I use and what is in them. I want the best of the best for my clients. I’m extremely talkative and empathetic which I think helps set me apart from most. I also have many, many, many hobbies; such as, cooking, sewing, crocheting, making jewelry, working out, Bible journaling, content creation, traveling, shopping (okay this one isn’t really a hobby…). I think being able to do many different things helps me relate to my clients and followers a lot more. I want my clients and followers to know I am ALWAYS here for a listening ear or someone to hype them up!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist, because being a hairstylist you’re definitely an artist, is the clients sending me videos/pictures of their hair weeks after and them still loving it so much.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think something non-creatives fail to understand is that inspiration comes in burst. I don’t always have a contend idea or a new hairstyle to try out. The mental load can be heavy sometimes because you constantly want to improve and be original, but sometimes it’s a struggle.
