We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful JJ Fox Hatch. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with JJ below.
Hi JJ , thanks for joining us today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
Although there are many crazy stories related to my business, the one crazy story I would like to share is the story that actually started me in the business. Some said I was bold, while others said I was crazy, but to me it was a leap of faith. To tell this story, I have to take you back to 2009. Picture this, here I am in the gym trying to get my work out on when one of my minister friends came to me and said the Lord told her that I was going to be in radio. I still remember the feeling I got from the message when she told me. The message immediately hit me in my spirit and I couldn’t shake it off. There I stood with mixed emotions. I was intrigued but still shaken. What do I do next? How do I move forward? I knew nothing about radio but now the idea was planted in my soul. Not letting go of the feeling, I remember I had a friend in the radio business, so I reached out to ask him for advice. The conversation did not go the way I thought it would go; he started telling me everything it would take to be on radio. He told me that I would have to go to broadcast school, and it would take me two years to get my radio certificate. Burst my bubble! Right at that time, a gentleman who overheard our conversation, thank God for eavesdroppers, jumped in the conversation. He told me he had a friend who just opened up a radio station and was looking for interns to help around. He gave me the owner’s information and told me to contact him. With this feeling still burning inside of me, I immediately contacted the owner who confirmed that he needed interns. He told me to be at the station at 7am to answer the phones. The next day I got up, I was so excited. There was no way I was going to mess this up. Now, this is where the story gets crazy. I got there at 6:30am, but the DJ did not show up for the 7 am show. The owner was running around frantic trying to find someone to replace the DJ for the show. In desperation, he told me to just sit in the radio room and press the button to go to commercials. After about 30 minutes, the phones started ringing off the hook; the audience was calling in demanding to hear the DJ. We all know how fans can be, so I took a leap of faith and did a crazy thing. I pressed the audio button that said ”mic” and I introduced myself to the listening audience saying, “this your girl Ms JJ”, to all 3.2 million of them, not knowing what the status of my internship was going to be. I went all in and took over the show. All of a sudden, the phone lines started blowing up again. At that time, the owner came into the studio. I didn’t know what he was going to say. I was thinking, this could be the shortest radio career of all time, a whole 30 minutes long! To my surprise, instead, he told me to keep going. The audience were calling in asking about the new female DJ at the radio station. They were in awe. The rest was history. I became the new prime time radio show host of VIBES 98 MEDIA. I absolutely loved radio! I became a multi award winning radio show host and later opened my own radio/tv station and network called Fox Trap Radio through Open Vision TV Networks. Fox Trap Radio is now live in 166 countries, with millions of listeners around the world!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Early on, I realized that customer service and networking are two of the most powerful tools. Both have become major components to building my reputation within my market. I remember going into different businesses and working with people who treated me like dirt. I vowed to never make anyone feel that way. It became my mission to make each customer feel that they matter and were more than just a client. I built relationships with my clients, which in turn helped with client return and additional referrals. A lot of individuals within my market only want to do the bare minimum, but for me, it’s the opposite. It is important for me to treat people the way I want to be treated. Going above and beyond for my client is an expectation and not the exception. Happy clients are the results of great service, and great service results in a great reputation.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn was doing life and business with no assistance. All my life, I never shared the responsibilities of my business. I did everything on my own. I felt that no one could understand my vision or meet my expectations of how I wanted business done, so I just did it myself. It wasn’t until I met my husband when I realized that’s what I was doing. He was the first person to tell me that I have to allow someone to help, and he wouldn’t take no for an answer. Slowly, but surely, I started to open up and allow him to help in the business. It wasn’t easy, but eventually I was able to adhere to a new way. We became a great team, sharing the responsibilities and decisions of the business. I learned to rely on him and he was able to rely on me. I no longer have to or want to do it all myself. I thank God for opening my eyes and showing me that team work makes the dream work.
This reminds me of the story of Moses in the Bible. When the Israelites went to battle, Moses had to keep his hands up for them to win, but when he got tired and started to lose strength, Aaron and Hur came to help. They lifted Moses’ hands up and with the help of God and his team, he won. In order to be successful, you need God and a good team, someone to hold your hands up.
