We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elizabeth Van Exel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Elizabeth, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
My very first client came to me from a referral by a family friend. This family friend knew what I could do, even though I hadn’t taken on clients yet. She worked at a theme park at the time and told one of her co-workers about me. That co-worker reached out to me to schedule an appointment. I knew what I was capable of, but I had never charged anyone for a reading before. I was extremely nervous because I knew this was very important to this client. Anytime you do a reading for someone where they are looking to speak to someone close to them that has passed away is a huge responsibility. There are a tremendous amount of emotions involved along with a high level of expectation. I really didn’t want them to leave disappointed. I wanted to give them the closure they needed. There was a lot of time spent in meditation leading up to my client’s arrival. The reading went better than I could have ever imagined. And I owe so much to that very first person that gave me the opportunity. I can trace back most of my appointments since then to that initial client. They referred me to their friends, and their friends told their friends about me. Words will never to able to fully express my gratitude to them. Because of them, I have been doing readings for people since 2013.

Elizabeth, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Elizabeth and I work as a psychic medium, card reader, reiki master teacher, healer, and an Advanced ThetaHealer®. Since beginning this journey, I have also studied and become certified as a medium, hypnotist, past life regressionist and an Angel Therapy Practitioner®. I am passionate about helping people find peace, healing and to help them learn more about themselves.
I first delved into the world of mediumship back in 2011. There was a kind woman who saw my potential and she began to work with me to grow and strengthen my gifts and abilities. I trained with her for just shy of two years before I started seeing clients on my own. She taught me all about intuition, trusting my gut, meditating, working with my angels and developing the gifts I have been given. I met with her once or twice a week where she would test me and help me understand how to interpret information. In 2013 I finally felt comfortable enough to begin taking on clients. In the beginning, I only offered Mediumship readings and Angel readings. Today, I still offer those readings, but I have added on reiki healings, ThetaHealing® sessions, past life regressions and both oracle and Lenormand card readings.
When I do a reading for someone, I try to make sure they get all of the information they need. And when I do a mediumship reading, I want them to trust 100% that I was in communication with their loved one. Despite my being in this business, I am also skeptic of most people who make claims of psychic abilities. There are so many “psychics” out there that are scamming people with vague details and generalized statements. I try to be specific as I can with any detail that comes across during a reading. While every reading is different, there shouldn’t be a question of the validity of the reading. I have had so many people come to me after they went to a reader and felt ripped off. My goal is for every single person to walk away from a reading with comfort, confidence, peace and healing.
I feel beyond grateful that I am able to do this type of work. It brings me so much happiness and peace and I hope that is conveyed to my clients.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
The most important element of doing readings or healings is not intuition or ability. For me, the very most important thing that I can offer is compassion and understanding. Every person is going through something in their life. It’s my job to help them work through their challenges, grief or healing process. If you don’t have empathy for others, you probably won’t make a very good healer. Being able to connect with your client is key. I truly want to see my clients live their best and healthiest life.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I feel that being accurate and honest when performing a service has helped build my reputation with my clients. Most of my appointments come from referrals, and that is the biggest compliment I can receive. When someone has been pleased with a reading or healing enough to recommend me to a friend or co-worker is amazing.
