We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Martha Ponce Ayala. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Martha below.
Hi Martha, thanks for joining us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
Dear Canvas Rebel,
First of all, thank you so much for the space to share my journey in the high-end service industry in México.
It all started as a coincidence when I was invited to work at a wedding celebration as a hostess freelancer when I was only 21 years old.
I immediately fell in love with the hospitality industry. My eyes and heart could not believe the amount of work and passion everyone had for events, certainly a life changer for me on that night, it was contagious, almost 20 years later, and I am so lucky to continue to enjoy it.
It all began as I always wanted to be an entrepreneur, independent, and be the first generation of women business owners in my family.
As I finished my MBA in my hometown and then moved to Baja, it was my dream to live enjoying the beach and make a huge amount of money. Of course, that did not happen. But I did enjoy the beach.
I have been in the area for over 10 years now, I started working alone, and then with a business partner, got robbed, and then alone again, and then got pregnant, and then another business partner, and then got robbed again, and then alone again, and then with my third business partner, I hit the jackpot! We worked amazingly together for over 5 years and built two brands in the Baja area, brands with freshness and creativity. Understanding all of the dos and don’ts in the wedding planning and design for destination weddings and events.
I was able to say goodbye to my business partner in the best way possible. We took different paths since I started to think bigger, and she wanted to continue on a boutique style.
I was able to visualize smart and talented young women like me working alongside great couples. If I had the talent to see the complete set of skills in associates, I would be able to develop a great team, and ta-da,5 years later, here we are.
It’s very nice to e-meet you, my name is Martha, and I went from hostess to owner.
