We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dana Salisbury Duarte, NP a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Is there a heartwarming story from your career that you look back on?
Before I ever became a nurse or nurse practitioner I was a massage therapist. I once found some unusual lumps on a man’s back and I told him to have them checked out. It turned out that he had breast cancer, but because I told him to get checked out they were able to catch it sooner and prevent it from spreading. He became a good friend of mine and went on to marry the love of his life; both he and his wife were so sweet they even went to my son’s birthday party. It broke my heart when I learned a few years later that he had tragically passed away from a complication related to chemo. I went to his funeral with his wife and niece and we spread his ashes together in the harbor. His wife took some time off and then decided to go back to school to be a pharmacist. Everyone has a tragedy but I believe that it’s best to turn grief and loss into a new chapter of success.

Dana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am California Family Nurse Practitioner who specializes in regenerative medicine and non-invasive aesthetic beauty treatments with natural, beautiful results. I am a mother of six children and I have a passion for wellness both inside and out. I want my patients to feel good about themselves! I truly believe that your best outcome is reached by addressing health of the entire body and your environment if you want to effectively impact how you look and feel. Your health and look is a composite of your life. I love helping my patients succeed and being part of their journey!
As a practitioner I am open minded and my goal is to make sure that I create a plan that addresses needs, wants, and budget. I have heard that if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life & I truly feel that statement applies to how I help my patients!

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Treating people well, how you would want to be treated is the only way to go.
Again in different words:
Take good care of your people!
That is why 97% of my clients come from referrals. At the end of the day what matters most is how your client feels. It’s not about anything else!

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Yes! I love listening to women entrepranuer podcasts while I drive and as a Christian I am especially aware of how my thinking and planning is inspired by a higher power… everywhere in the Bible it says how you are blessed when you are faithful, even when life circumstances are hard.
I don’t buy into other people’s negativity or negative projections because I feel called to do what I do.
