We were lucky to catch up with Jasmyn Raines recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jasmyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
My first job in esthetics led me directly to where I am now! I was never the person who wanted to own a business and scale up, I was perfectly content working for another salon. When I spoke up continuously for myself and others when I felt we weren’t getting what we deserved, I was let go. I was completely lost and confused on my next step. Especially having a non-compete in place at the time. After a few weeks I knew what I had to do. Up was the only way to go! I started touring salon suites, planning for my business license, and grabbing any bit of inspiration on Pinterest that I could get my hands on. I started completely over with no clients and very few followers on my business page. It’s been two years now and I couldn’t imagine working for anyone else again.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I broke into the esthetics industry purely out of personal need. I had suddenly become riddled with skin issues from dry patches to redness to cystic acne. I started on YouTube university. I fell in love with a few creators and would sit for hours and suck up knowledge. Spending any extra dollar I could on a new skincare product they would recommend. Makeup had been a passion of mine for years and with my newfound skincare knowledge, I started looking into what it would take to obtain an esthetic license. I thought about it, probably for a few years before walking into the school one day and signing a contract that same day. I don’t know what came over me but I felt like it was now or never!
I love offering my clients education. The skincare market has grown soooo much over the past 5 years. It can be overwhelming and confusing. I want to offer a safe space to learn what works for your specific skin type. And take it step by step to your best skin possible, which looks different for everyone.
I use my combined love of skincare and makeup to provide the best brow services as well. I always offer an array of waxes for different hair & skin types as well as threading for sensitive skin. Nothing is one size fits all so every service is custom to each client. And that is what I’m most proud of. Quality tools, quality ingredients, no corners being cut. I want every person to walk out feeling pampered and refreshed.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I started off not knowing much at all, I was getting many reviews on my website but that wasn’t really bringing in anyone new. I consulted with a friend who has his own business and he said “You need a google business page!” My first thought was really? I thought people booked beauty mainly by referral or Instagram. But I made that google page, asked my clients for google reviews- and offered a discount on their next service. Next thing you know, google became my biggest supply of new clientele when I asked.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn was comparison. I have started with very humble beginnings which can be hard with social media. You see your dream salons, with estheticians having back to back bookings, saying how they made six figures. But every journey is different. And focusing on my client experiences and quality of my work is what makes me fulfilled. I am never more at peace than I am in my salon, doing my services the way I like them with the products I want to use. And I am so proud of that!
