We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lanie Caron a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lanie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
There’s so much I would change about the education system. I see children, from an early age through high school, burdened with excessive textbook work that often lacks long-term value—especially for those with creative inclinations. True hard work is learned through action, not hours spent memorizing material. In my view, this traditional model does little to inspire imagination or innovation.
I was homeschooled through high school, and I deeply appreciate how that experience shaped me. Rather than being confined to a rigid structure, my learning was hands-on, flexible, and fueled by inspiration. I was constantly encouraged to think outside the box. My mom played a huge role in that—she fostered a mindset of independence and critical thinking. She was always researching healthier ways to eat and live, and that spirit of curiosity and self-direction has greatly influenced my approach as an esthetician.
Unfortunately, that kind of thinking is often lost in today’s school system. I believe the ability to think for yourself, to do your own research, and to question the status quo is what truly sets people apart. When students are encouraged to be hands-on, to ask questions, and to explore their ideas freely, they’re more likely to build meaningful, fulfilling lives and careers. Creativity thrives where curiosity is welcomed.
Lanie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, I’m Lanie Caron, a holistic esthetician and founder of Lanie Caron Skin. I’m a busy mom of two and deeply passionate about skin health and overall well-being. My journey into esthetics has been anything but traditional—and I think that’s what makes my approach so unique.
I’ve always been drawn to people and the desire to help others live more fulfilled, confident lives. Before finding my calling, I explored a variety of paths—modeling, working with adults with disabilities, and even studying to become an occupational therapist. But somewhere along the way, I realized I didn’t want to be buried in textbooks anymore. I wanted to work with my hands, connect with people, and create something beautiful in the process. That’s when esthetics found me.
The face, to me, felt like a canvas—a space for creativity, care, and transformation. I fell in love with the idea of helping people feel their absolute best in their own skin. I knew I had a natural instinct for it, and I followed that passion wholeheartedly.
In this industry, patience and connection are everything. Trust is foundational. Before anything else, I focus on building a relationship with my clients. I want them to feel safe, seen, and fully cared for. The facial itself is the second step—but it’s the connection that sets the tone. That’s what I believe truly sets me apart: my ability to form genuine, lasting connections.
My technique is deeply influenced by my background as a ballerina. I trained for ten years, and I like to think of a facial as a kind of dance—fluid, intentional, and never rushed or mechanical. Each movement is purposeful, creating a soothing rhythm that relaxes the body and rejuvenates the skin.
Of course, there’s also the knowledge side. Skin care isn’t one-size-fits-all. I spend a lot of time researching products, ingredients, and skin behavior so I can customize every treatment. I offer a variety of facials—including classic, acne-focused, microcurrent, brightening, and “aging gracefully” facials—but what I’m most proud of is my individualized, holistic approach.
At Lanie Caron Skin, every client receives a thoughtfully tailored experience. We don’t just talk about your skin—we look at your daily habits, your nutrition, your stress levels, your routines. I hand-pick products based on your unique needs and goals, and together, we build a skin care routine that supports your health from the inside out.
This work is ever-evolving, and I’m always learning. There’s so much to explore in the world of skin, and I believe the more knowledge I gain, the more trust I can earn from the people who choose to work with me. Because to me, this isn’t just about giving a facial—it’s about offering care, empowerment, and a space to truly glow.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I became a business owner while I was still breastfeeding my daughter—she was just 10 months old. At the time, I was a full-time mom caring for two young children, and my husband and I were in the thick of remodeling what is now our studio. It was a whirlwind, to say the least.
Starting a business under those circumstances wasn’t easy. It still isn’t. There have been more roadblocks than I ever could have imagined—especially dealing with difficult and, at times, unreasonable people who’ve tried to slow down or even sabotage what I’m trying to build. That’s been the hardest part—navigating the emotional toll of situations that feel unfair and draining.
But through it all, I’ve kept going. I’ve had to make some really tough decisions, often in moments when I was already stretched thin. Still, I stand by how I’ve handled it. I’ve learned to protect my energy fiercely and to pour it only into what matters—my family, my clients, and the vision I have for Lanie Caron Skin.
What I’ve come to believe is this: the difficult times will come, but they will also pass. And when you keep showing up—especially when it’s hard—you come out stronger and more grounded in your purpose. That’s what keeps me going. That’s why I’m still here, building something I truly believe in.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Keeping in touch with clients has been such a joy for me. I love checking in to see how their skin has been feeling and how their routines are going, It is so important to show you care and that is where the holistic part comes into play. You care about their whole self and how their daily habits will affect the overall skin health. Part of my new client incentive, is a personalized skincare routine. It really fosters brand loyalty and shows that you are willing to go the extra mile. I am currently working on a monthly subscription incentive in addition to a substack. I want my clients to have the information firsthand and to learn new things about their skin health.
