We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anthony Garcia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Anthony thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
What set me on my path to opening an office was my dedication to my work, taking courses, and becoming a ClearCorrect provider. ClearCorrect is a clear aligner company for which I was recognized by and selected to become a Key Opinion Leader on their behalf. I was sponsored by Straumann, the parent company for ClearCorrect, to attend a speaker development series offered by DevRight (a well known company in the dental speaker circuit). Achieving early success with clear aligners and general dentistry is what provided me with the confidence as a provider along with realization that all doctors are only as good as their team and tools at their disposal regardless of clinical skill. Realizing that being a great clinician is only part of the equation and more growth could be had developing a team and systems. I began looking to my team for growth and advice, becoming their leader and guiding them to achieve greater success. My team was a great source of untapped potential and knowledge with many years of combined experience and knowledge. Any young dentist looking to start their own practice I’d recommend speaking to their team and picking their brain about their professional opinions and asking what it takes to perform their job along with understanding how the business is ran from an office manager, front desk, and practice owner.

Anthony , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was tossed into the dental world at the age of seven when I was diagnosed with genetic condition involving extra teeth above my two front teeth. The teeth were deformed and black/orange in color. These teeth prevented my adult upper two front from erupting and required surgery to remove. The teeth were eventually removed, however I was without my two front teeth for what seemed like 3 years but took a year and a half, 3 years of braces, and an additional surgical procedure. My journey began here and lead to me applying for dental school as an adult. What sets me apart from most providers is my quality of work, gentleness, honesty, and artistic ability. I make it a priority to overcome patients fears and make their experience as pleasant as possible by taking my time and not rushing to provide a painless experience along with quality dentistry. I believe all patents want this and have come appreciate and expect this from me after being pleasantly surprised after their first visit with me. I’ve noticed they are much more relaxed during the following visits. My ultimate goal is to provide a pleasant experience to patients with premium dental technology and treatment materials/devices. This can range from advance cone-beam imaging, industry leading intra-oral scanning for digital impressions, premium dental materials, 3D printed fillings made of porcelain, and eventually lasers with countless applications/functions,

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I’ve dealt with several setbacks during the process of building my business and have come to learn that all things will pass and having a mind that can switch to a solution driven focus can make the difference between successfully moving through obstacles and events that are out of your control. I’ve learned this after countless situations that caused me stress and having to reset and focus on my ultimate goal. If anything continues to bother me, I’ve learned it’s best to speak up and solve the issue than to have doubts later down the line. I’ve also realized being a business owners being able to deal with problems as they come up, accept them, solve them and move on to the next set of problems. My mindset is every problem is a gift, a solution, and an improvement waiting to happen.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I’ve had to learn to go my own way and not follow what many offices have done over and over again. Going with my vision and what I had in my mind is what has led me to have an office that is elegant, classy, and uniquely my own. A well thought out vision that has come to life despite being told what to do by traditional and repeated designs, layouts, and processes. I favored an ultra-modern design, excellent layout, and investment in quality equipment that speaks to my philosophy of elegance and tranquility which is what the Lotus represents for me in the name of my office: Lotus Dentistry.
