We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Titus Haug. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Titus below.
Titus, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Risk goes hand in had with pursuing a dream. It seems that all things that are worth while take a lot of time, investment and hard work to obtain and maintain. That goes for relationships, growing plants and food or in this case, creating art and making a living from that. For me my passion in music led me to a point where I realized I would need to front some serious cash in order to make my first record. I was young and broke, so I decided to do a Kickstarter which was both a vulnerable and scary thing to do. However, in my mind, I was on a path that I felt strongly inspired by. I was determined to give it my all. It would have taken years to save the money needed if I were to save the money little by little. I needed a creative way to fund the project so I decided to go for it with the crowdfund. After a very anxious month or spreading the word about my fund raiser, thankfully the project got funded. The inertia from that risk led to me recording and releasing my first album which in turn led to future albums and tours.

Titus, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who haven’t come across my work–which I imagine is most of you!–I am a multi-disciplinary artist residing in San Diego, California. My Artistic pursuits include music, Photography and painting. The beautiful thing about art is that if you are creating from the uniqueness of your humanity, your work will naturally be different from others. For me I strive to approach my disciplines with a genuine sense of discovery and creativity. Whether that be songwriting, surf photography or painting. At different times one of these disciplines may be more of a focus for me, but I find the different forms of creative pursuit to be a refreshing thing. For instance, my work in Surf Photography may influence my painting or music and vice versa. I’ve followed my curiosities and interests as an artist and that is what has led me on the path that I am on.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission for the creative journey that I am on is two-fold.
Firstly I seek to be a good steward of the ability and passion to create art by continuing to do so throughout my life.
Secondly I seek to work on long term projects which value the time and craft that it takes to create something truly memorable and impactful.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the greatest gifts as an artist is to share your art with others and see how it impacts their lives. I recently put on an art show in my hometown. It was amazing to see peoples faces light up as they viewed the paintings and the projections on the wall. When you are working on art, often it can be many hours upon hours spent alone working out a song, or a painting or capturing a photo. The end result however is both a personal joy in having created something of worth, and also a communal joy of being inspired by that work of art. It’s a beautiful thing. To me that process of sharing art with others is the most rewarding aspect.
