We recently connected with Janeisha Mays and have shared our conversation below.
Janeisha , appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
When I think about my entrepreneurial journey, it all seems very risky. I remember in college telling my boyfriend, “entrepreneurship is your thing, not mine. I plan to climb the corporate ladder and be the CNO of a hospital.” Tell God your plans and watch him laugh! When I decided to go into nursing entrepreneurship, I honestly didn’t think it all through. I knew that I didn’t want to be a bedside nurse forever and I knew that if I wanted to walk away from it, I had to have something else to do with my life. I was reaching my personal goal mark of going back to school to obtain my master’s. I had done my research, found the program I wanted to pursue as well as the school, and was working on recommendation letters from previous employers and colleagues. It was at the moment that I was 1 week from submitting my application by the deadline date that I realized, I didn’t want to take that career path. Throughout nursing school, I learned about climbing the corporate ladder in healthcare. You get your bachelor’s degree, and you either become an NP or go to CRNA school. If that’s not your track you can get your master’s and go into nursing education or a type of administration area. At the time, I knew absolutely nothing about nursing entrepreneurship, I didn’t even know it existed honestly. I didn’t know what I was going to do but I did know, that my path was meant to be in another direction. I continued to work as a bedside travel nurse in the ER throughout the pandemic and I came across an Instagram page of this nurse practitioner and business boss that sucked me in. As I began to follow the journey of this woman, it opened my eyes to a world I never knew existed. I began to think about how I could leverage my skills as an RN away from the bedside. I saw this posting to attend a virtual nurses in business conference with this same lady I had been following. I had less than 12 hours to register for the conference. My life was transformed during that conference. I didn’t know how I was going to do it but I filed an LLC for my business 2 weeks later. I knew that there was more I was destined to do, I just didn’t know exactly what that was. I knew that my love for nursing, as I knew it, was fading fast after the pandemic but I knew the passion was still there, it just needed to be reignited. The risk to leave a stable, comfortable, traditional workforce and embark on an uncharted territory for me was monumental. The way that I originally envisioned this business going turned out to be the complete opposite! That LLC I filed 2 weeks after, I ended up having to dissolve. Not because the vision wasn’t there but because the path to get to that vision wasn’t. Dissolving 1 LLC to start another one, the way that God intended for me was exactly what I needed to do. I established my business a little over a year ago and I have already made a name for myself within my community with various events and community partnerships. My vision is for my business to retire me from the bedside altogether, and I will get there. A lot of people still don’t understand why I would risk my stable career as a nurse to go into entrepreneurship, which is deemed “unstable.” And I tell them, “it’s not for you to understand,” As a person, I am forever evolving, some people may understand the journey and some will fall off and that’s ok. In order to have a great reward, you have to take a great risk. I am continuing to take risks in my business and continue to bet on myself, because if I don’t, who else will?

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is Janeisha Mays, RN, owner, and founder of Eudaimonia Wellness & Beauty, a wellness spa in Dallas, TX where I help women grow luxuriantly by offering high-quality health and beauty services as well as products to optimize, restore and renew their health. Eudaimonia means human flourishing, so I decided to apply that concept to the wellness and beauty space. I have been an ER/trauma nurse for 6.5 years and have been serving patients in the reactive healthcare space. When something goes wrong, patients come to see me in the ER. If a patient has had poor follow-up after a procedure, they come to see me in the ER. If a patient just needs to see a doctor, they come to see me in the ER. I have worked in some of the busiest ERs in the country and I was seeing the same thing day in and day out. When I decided to go into entrepreneurship, I knew that a missing link in our healthcare system was the focus on preventative healthcare. At Eudaimonia Wellness & Beauty we offer IV hydration, vitamin injections, vaginal steams, and medically managed weight loss programs. My goal is to shift the narrative to care for yourself while you are well for as long as you can that way when you do get sick you will be better equipped to manage your sickness. I am most proud of how I am continuing to grow Eudaimonia Wellness & Beauty. In the next couple of months, we will be adding a personal trainer to our team to assist with our medically managed weight loss program as well as a clinical lab to be able to provide highly reliable laboratory data to satisfy the needs of clinicians involved in medical practice and health maintenance of patients.
My team of healthcare professionals brings over 20 years of healthcare experience to my business, all of us being ER-trained clinicians that allow us to assess and anticipate the needs of our clients.
We are a space where you are guaranteed to get exceptional care but also a relaxing and renewed experience every time you are serviced by us.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Atomic Habits by James Clear had a major impact on my entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy. There were several habits I had to break for my business to thrive. I honestly didn’t think I had “bad habits” per se, but realizing things that I was doing in my personal life were showing up in my business and I didn’t like that. So for me to successfully move forward, I had to set routines in my daily life, I had to get crystal clear on who I wanted to be in life so that that person was also able to show up in business as well. Another amazing resource that has significantly impacted my entrepreneurial thinking is the podcasts by Anthony O’Neal. My boyfriend introduced me to the shows on YouTube about 10 months ago and I have been hooked ever since. The guests that he brings on the show are so impactful to my business that I implement something from every podcast.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
That you only get 1 chance to get it right. At the bedside, this is very important because most times, you only have 1 chance to get it right because it can be a life or death situation. This does NOT apply to business. A lot of times, you are going to have to swing at the same target multiple times before you hit it and that’s ok. It’s perfectly ok to fail in business and life because in that failure there is a lesson to be learned. It may mean that you fail at the same task multiple times, but each time you are learning something different that you didn’t know before so that you can reach your intended goal. I had to unlearn that because being afraid to fail was keeping me stagnant in my business. I was afraid to try new things, I was afraid to go after things that I didn’t think were attainable for me all because of the fear that held me back. Once I learned the lessons from the failures, I am not so hesitant to try and do new things because even if I fail at that particular thing, I will learn how to do it better the next time!
