We were lucky to catch up with Eric Ji recently and have shared our conversation below.
Eric, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
In college, I took some computer science courses for a minor. At the time, almost all computer science courses were not interesting to me – until I took Intro to Web Development! There I learned the fundamentals of building a website, and fell in love cooking up sites ever since:)
The one thing I would have done to speed up my learning process would be to build, build, build new sites! Whether it’s for a friend’s million dollar business idea he thought about in the shower, or for local businesses/creatives, I think I learned the most from taking the initiative and starting a new project.
I think a skill that was most essential for me was to always be curious. Technology is evolving faster than ever, and in order to keep up with what is the latest and greatest in tech, you always need to be learning new things.
An obstacle that stood in the way of learning more for me was the fear of the unknown – even though there were some technologies I did not know how to use before taking on a project, the world wide web is a powerful place to find any kind of information!
Eric, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Eric Ji, and I am a creative web designer and developer! I started my journey in a similar way as other creatives – me and my friends had a cool idea, and we tried to execute our vision through a website! Ever since that first website, I fell in love with creating unique websites that tell a story and create a lasting impression.
I started reaching out to local businesses/creatives offering my website services. However, one of my biggest opportunities came while browsing the web for cool sites and stumbling upon AWGE, a creative agency found by A$AP Rocky(https://awge.com/). On a whim, I decided to submit a ocntact form on their site asking for pointers in my current journey as a creative web designer and developer, because why not?! Surprisingly enough, AWGE reached back out to me, and since then, I have been working on websites with artists such as Austin Mahone, and ecommerce brands such as Demmo.
Something I am the most proud of about my work is how every website I create is truly unique- back in the early 2000’s, websites on the internet never followed a cookie-cutter template- they were always a reflection of the person who created it. This is my mission as a creative web designer & developer – bring back personality on the World Wide Web.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative web designer and developer is being able to bring my client’s vision to life! Whether it’s for a business or an individual, helping people make their dream or idea into a reality is something I take pride in.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
To bring back the wacky websites in the early 2000’s era of the Internet!
