We were lucky to catch up with Salome Pilas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Salome, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
In order to succeed at least for me, you need the following traits.
– focus
– perseverance
– resilience
– passion of what you do and need to take risk.
I was burnt out of my job and it feels like a dead end for me and so I went to back to school to get my degree hoping to get a better job. After graduation (with an international business degree) I couldn’t find a job and this is when I started the foodtruck. When I started the food truck, all I wanted was to replace my income of $200 a day as a bill collector. I wanted to share my love for food and introduced Filipino food to the non Filipinos. And this is when my journey begins.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was burnt out of my job and it feels like a dead end for me and so I went to back to school to get my degree hoping to get a better job. After graduation (with an international business degree) I couldn’t find a job and this is when I started the foodtruck. When I started the food truck, all I wanted was to replace my income of $200 a day as a bill collector. I wanted to share my love for food and introduced Filipino food to the non Filipinos. And this is when my journey begins. My real name is Salome pronounced as SAH-LU-ME (people usually pronounced it as Salom, or Salami) so I used my nickname Oming, hence Oming’s Kitchen was formed.
I served two of my most favorite filipino food, LUMPIA which is a deep fried spring rolls with ground pork and vegetables) and also SINUGBA (which means grilled). I grew up in a small town called Dumaguete, a small town in the Philippines where sinugba is everywhere. It’s normally grilled meat on a stick, but since I want to introduce the food to the non Filipinos and also wanted to do a twist on it, I decided not to put it on a stick and decided to do it without and served on a rice bowl.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think it’s my personality. I’m always at the foodtruck cooking. Back then I couldn’t afford to pay anyone so it would just be me doing everything and my girlfriend helping me doing the cashier. She would always introduced me to people. Seeing people smile when they taste the food inspired me to even work harder. If you love what you do, it doesn’t become work. I spent countless hours preparing the food and always so excited to go to events with the food truck.
