We recently connected with Paris Ross and have shared our conversation below.
Paris, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Since I was old enough to remember, I’ve been in a kitchen. Whether with my grandfather, aunt, dad or Big Mama. Cooking and baking have always been a labor of love to me. It gave me a sense of accomplishment to watch people enjoy my cakes or even a simple meal like stir fry.
After having my daughter, I had a hard time finding a job which obviously caused financial hardship. I’m fortunate to have the support I do, but I was in a dark place mentally because I wasn’t sure how I was contributing to my child’s wellbeing with no money or control of my own situation. I wanted to be a mother my baby could be proud of, so I enrolled in school and decided to use one of my skills to bring some income.
My cousin, Justin, was my first customer. He ordered a strawberry lemonade cake with whipped icing for his birthday. Next was my Uncle, who had weekly orders coming for almost 6 months! I realized that not only were my orders bringing money in, but they were also lifting my spirits. While I was feeding others but also feeding myself.
I found myself feeling more motivated, so I started promoting online (personal Facebook and Instagram pages), then moved towards creating business pages. I still have some work to do so I can get to the level I’m aiming for, but I’m so glad I’m able to do something I love while providing a service to others.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My Name is Paris and I’m the Owner and Operator of PD’s Delights Home Bakery. I’ve been cooking and baking since about age 12 but the bakery has been open since early 2024. I offer cookies, cakes and other baked goods, like loaves of bread and rolls. While I do offer standard flavors (chocolate chip cookies, red velvet cake, etc), I also offer custom creations, themed goodies and soon I’ll offer treat packages for events (baby showers, birthday parties for example). I run on a non-conventional schedule. While I do consultations and accept pre-orders throughout the week, pickups are only Friday-Sunday unless it’s a custom order. Also, my menu tends to rotate. I take pride in each baked good I create, whether for an event or personal sweet treat. I am most proud of the space I have for growth, and the sense of community that has come with this line of work. So far, this is a one-woman show, so receiving the support and encouragement that comes gives me all the more determination to meet my goals!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I actually only recently started promoting on social media, but I am holding a contest in the upcoming month. Follow my Instagram to enter!! @pdsdelights
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I would have to say the best source for new clients is word of mouth. A huge chunk of my clients has come from me either mentioning that I bake, or current clients bragging about their latest orders.
