We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kym Holley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kym, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I believe success takes a combination of willingness to learn and understanding that others can teach you so much about whatever industry you are in, a strong faith to lean on during all part of your journey, grit to never give up and the intention to show up every single day even if you feel like you’re not going to reach your end goal, a support system that stands by you, and being able to create a positive work environment for your employees.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been licensed and working in esthetics for around fourteen years. Through these many years I’ve had the privilege to not only build a loyal clientele but also open my own day spa and build many amazing relationships with others in the industry.
When I was in high school, I truly could not decide on what I wanted to do. I was torn between the beauty industry or diving into the medical field in some fashion. My parents and I decided together that I would start at what was the most local community college to our hometown. Though I love the medical side of things, I never completely focused myself. In 2011 our hometown was completely destroyed about an EF5 tornado. In the midst of getting back on our feet and reevaluating how we viewed our life after such a tragedy, my parents suggested I followed what they knew my heart was seeking and with doing so, they helped me get started financially in what was the best beauty school in our state at the time, Vaughn’s Beauty College.
After graduating from beauty school, I knew I had to set goals and focus myself to build a clientele and give those clients reason to trust me with their skin care. I’ve spent each year making sure I do as much continuing education as possible. From traveling all over the United States to being on zoom classes, I do some form of training nearly monthly. Thanks to being persistent when it comes to education I am certified in Aerolase Lasers, Face Reality Acne Specialist, Mississippis Nufree educator, certified in multiple microchanneling and microneedling devices such as Procell, Oncology Esthetic Certified, the only Master Hydrafacialist in North Mississippi, a licensed tattoo artist, and more. It’s rewarding to walk into my treatment room and see a wall full of certifications and knowing that its goals I’ve reached while I aim to reach more goals.
In the midst of this journey I’ve been blessed to achieve other goals such as winning Best Esthetician in the Golden Triangle multiple years and Among The Best in other years, published in Catfish Alley Magazine, opening a Day Spa with four of the best coworkers, winning Best Day Spa in the Golden Triangle just a year after opening and fourth Best Day Spa in Mississippi by Mississippi Magazine.
I offer many esthetic services and aim to give service a bit of “fluff” and relaxation even if the focus is treatment. Body waxing, treatment facials, Hydrafacials, Microblading, Brow services, relaxation facials and lash services are some of the services you can expect to see my menu. No matter the service a client books, my goal is to make sure it’s customized to your individual needs as every person is unique in their own way. Making sure each client, no matter their walk in life, feels safe, comfortable and welcomed is the ultimate priority in my treatment room. It’s a blessing to get to meet so many new people by working in this industry and I will
Never get tired of helping others gain their self-confidence back. From acne to scars and hyperpigmentation, I can’t wait to help so many of you!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being consistent will always help build clientele but I truly believe meeting them on a more personal level means even more to them. I celebrate clients in their achievements and I make sure to lend a helping hand when they might be in need. Remember as much of their life stories as possible and always check in on things they mentioned previously. It shows you care and are truly listening to them.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Giving your entire life to the job! Starting out I thought I had to be there every second the doors were open. I never took Saturdays off and I missed so much of my kids lives from school awards day to ballgames. In 2016 our world changed when my first husband passed away after battling cancer for nine months. I missed many of the last moments with him as well due to having to be at work. After going through that I learned to always, no matter what, put family first. Clients that care and are loyal will always be happy to see you put family first. Don’t miss the ballgames, birthdays and etc!
