We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dewey Huang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dewey, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my Mandarin Bossa Nova Suite. This innovative suite forges a new path in Chinese pop and jazz by blending the lyrical beauty and nostalgia of classic Chinese oldies—especially those of Teresa Teng—with the sophisticated rhythms and harmonies of Bossa Nova, inspired by icons like Antônio Carlos Jobim, Stan Getz, and Luiz Bonfa. This project is especially close to my heart because it represents both my musical journey and my cultural identity.
It all began as a personal experiment, but it eventually grew into something much bigger. After countless hours of writing and rewriting, I realized the music deserved to be brought to life on stage with an orchestral setting. I arranged and conducted a 10-piece ensemble, including a string quartet, saxophone, rhythm section, and vocalist, to fully capture the suite’s lush textures. Premiering the project at NYU’s International Student Arts Incubator Showcase at La MaMa Experimental Theatre was truly a dream come true. Sharing this cross-cultural fusion with a wider audience and seeing such a positive response was incredibly rewarding.
Looking ahead, the next stage for this project is studio recording. I’ve taken full advantage of my time at NYU, especially in the Advanced Orchestration class, to collaborate with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra for the orchestral arrangements. This collaboration will add even more depth and vibrancy to the recordings.
What makes this project so meaningful to me is how it bridges different parts of my identity—my heritage, my love for jazz, and my passion for storytelling through music. It’s also a celebration of collaboration, as musicians from diverse backgrounds came together to create something truly unique. Seeing audiences connect emotionally with the music, regardless of language or background, reminded me of the universal power of music to bring people together and inspire new possibilities.

Dewey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I hold a master’s degree from New York University’s renowned Songwriting Program, where I had the privilege of learning from legendary songwriter-producers Phil Galdston and Barry Eastmond, who had worked with Celine Dion and Diana Ross respectively. Their mentorship challenged me to refine my craft and develop a voice that is both technically skilled and emotionally resonant. Along the way, I was honored with a Scholar Award from the Songwriting Hall of Fame and was selected as one of eleven recipients for the 2024 Johnny Mercer Songwriting Intensive—recognition that has fueled my drive to keep pushing creative boundaries.
What truly sets me apart is the range of my skill set and my ability to seamlessly integrate multiple roles within the music creation process. As a songwriter, producer, arranger, guitarist, session coordinator, and music marketing specialist, I approach every project holistically—bridging genres and cultures while ensuring every detail, from composition to execution and promotion, is thoughtfully crafted. My versatility allows me to collaborate effectively and adapt to the unique needs of each project, creating music that resonates emotionally, intellectually, and culturally. I take pride in my collaborative spirit and genuinely enjoy working alongside other talented individuals who inspire and elevate each other’s artistry.
For potential collaborators or fans, I want you to know that I bring this comprehensive and adaptable approach to every project I undertake. Whether you’re seeking someone to write original songs, produce your music, arrange and lead a band, oversee a recording session, or help your music reach a wider audience, I approach each role with dedication, professionalism, and a passion for helping every project achieve its fullest potential.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the most significant pivots in my life was the decision to move from a background in economics and statistics, which I studied during my undergraduate years, to pursuing a music career. This wasn’t a decision I made lightly. Coming from a non-musical family that valued stability and traditional career paths, I knew that choosing music—a field known for its unpredictability and challenges—would raise a lot of questions, especially from my parents.
The conversation with my family was ongoing and, at times, difficult. My parents were understandably doubtful at first; they worried about the risks and uncertainties that come with a creative career. But I was clear with myself and with them: while the path in music would undoubtedly be tougher and less stable than what I’d studied before, it was also where my true talent and passion lie. I felt a deep sense of purpose in music that I had never experienced elsewhere, and I could genuinely envision myself devoting my life to this craft and unlocking my full potential.
As I immersed myself in my work and began to see tangible results—whether it was recognition from mentors, receiving awards, or growing my audience—my parents started to see the impact of my efforts. Over time, their doubts gradually shifted to understanding and, eventually, trust. This journey taught me not only the importance of following what truly matters to you, but also the value of patience and open communication with those you care about.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the privilege of transforming any experience or emotion into something beautiful. There’s something extraordinary about being able to encapsulate moments—whether joyful, painful, or fleeting—into songs that can exist forever. Knowing that my music has the power to inspire, comfort, or resonate with others is incredibly meaningful. It’s a unique way to connect with people on a deep level, and to leave a lasting imprint through creativity and expression.
