We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rachel Scully . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rachel below.
Rachel , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
A risk? I’ve never looked at anything in my life as that. Let’s take a look back at my sophomore year of high school when my father was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, and I had an abrupt move back home to Orlando FL, from the good ole Smokey mountains, during, of course, COVID.-19. Having a large interest in politics, my father asked me to join the East River High School debate, team. I excelled in the craft, and 2 years later made it through the semi-finals at the national competition for student congress (NCFL), on top of 2nd place in Florida with thanks to my coach, Mr. Mayes! Prior to making a leadership role in debate my senior year, (2021-2022) my father ended up passing away from this terminal illness… given my luck, our first day at the market was the week after, but we made it out to East Orlando Farmers Market, and gosh was it nothing we expected, a 16-year-old figuring out taxes and business documents… A wild idea from 2 teenagers in a chill room was brought to life, “ScullysJewelryandGreeneryLLC. After some time of being a yogi and practicing the craft, Drew Scully, Arielle Scully, and I (Rachel Scully) took our first-ever hot yoga class. Leading me to begin my journey with “yoga renew teacher training”. Most will say running a business and teaching yoga will be a gamble, but for any dynamic woman… it’s another seed in the soil.
Rachel , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Back during the Covid-19 lockdown and my father’s diagnosis, I was attempting to find a hobby. After I started making wire-wrapped crystal rings, I ventured out into the realm of earrings… Selling them to family members, and even giving them out for free. Then it hit us! Already having a love for plants and being the free-spirited individuals we are naturally, we started thrifting pots and obtained agriculture licenses for our new product, we like to call them “cacti in a cup”. The ice cream industry wasn’t cutting the chase anymore and to be honest, I was tired of working for the man, and not contributing to my society, and knowing life can be short with my father passing at (42), the idea of working away the valuable time I have is no longer in the books. Bringing something as simple as plants and Jewelry, alongside helping the mental stability of beautiful souls and our earth is enough to make me happy. That is why I built my business.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
On a more personal level, I am known as @Thatbeetlechick on TikTok, and have accumulated over 59.0k followers! I am a proud owner of a 1970 VW beetle and an active member of the VW community. Posting consistently and making something aesthetically pleasing can make every difference when it comes to social media. Not forgetting that “the more followers, the more hate that comes with it.” and it’s not always sunshine and rainbows. I guess what I’m getting at is… it’s overrated…
Personally, I think the videos you try the least on, go the most viral… funny huh?
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Gosh… Senior year, from coming back to reality from Covid-19 to being the debate right-hand man, owning a business, and focusing on my family all at the same time, it paid off when I got my last high school yearbook! The pages included; The most dynamic woman in the school, a page for the business, debate achievements, and an interview about how we got started! I pride myself on sustaining the ideology that the stepping stones we go through lead to a bigger surprise… which is why I was able to juggle so much at once while keeping a positive attitude.
