We were lucky to catch up with Tony Marsico recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tony, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
After graduating high school I pursued a career in taxidermy and worked part time as a drawbridge oiler. I realized that being a musician just might be the easier path to take.

Tony, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Sometimes it just take one person to spark an idea which could then turn into your life’s passion. I hail from a musical family where my uncle was a be bop drummer who taught my brother drums at an early age. My brother passed the torch to me as well and by the age of 16 I knew I wanted to be a professional bassist for the rest of my life. After moving from Philadelphia to Los Angeles in 1981 my brother and I formed our band focusing our style on what we loved and knew well, Cool Jazz. We named our Band The Martini Kings and after 43 years and 30 albums released we continue to perform regularly doing what we love.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I enjoy encouraging others and inspiring them to follow their path.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I feel strongly that it all begins in the classroom. In an era of budget cuts and termination of most creative things I can’t stress enough how valuable and important it is for schools to offer a music program to their students.
