We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Milne a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
When asked the question “Are you happy as a business owner?”, my initial response is yes! I 100% love my job and what I do. But on a certain level I do wish I got to work a regular job sometimes. It would be nice to have a break every now and then, and also have some social interaction, since I mostly sell through online platforms (a few things that you only get when working a regular job). However, running my small business allows me to be a stay at home mom and raise my little boy.

Jessica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jessica Milne, I’m 21 years old and have been running Silverspoon Rings for 6 years! I have been married to my husband, Ty, for two years, and we now have a little boy name Dean!
I originally started this business as a hope to earn money my Junior year of highschool. I was busy with extracurricular activities, sports, homework, and my social life. It definitely started out slow. Mostly orders from friends at school and family members. Then one night, a video I posted to the social media platform, TikTok, went viral and I ended up getting over 100 orders in one night! This was a turning point for my company.
Silverspoon Rings focuses on handmade jewelry made from old silverware pieces. One of the things I love most is finding unique, one of a kind pieces.
I began to invest into my company more and more. I have online orders monthly, and attend the city farmers market almost every week. It’s slowed down a bit trying to balance mom life and work life, but I wouldn’t change anything for the world!
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
To begin this business I collaborated with my older sister, Anna. We both invested money into it, and then both profited from orders. However, Anna became too busy with school and work to continue helping and I decided it was in our best interest to continue the company on my own. I earned the money back that she had originally invested and paid her back.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
One of the best sources for new clients recently had been through social media. Instagram has been a great place to post photos and get my name out there. However, TikTok has been the better platform for going viral and reaching audiences across the globe.
