We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Krishawn Crockett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Krishawn , appreciate you joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
There are numerous occasions where I have encountered kind gestures from the people around me . In fact, so many that till this day I can’t wrap my head around but, if I had to narrow it down, it would be the gesture of a man who took a chance on me with investing in me in this business. I had been working with his son for some time training and mentoring him when one day his dad asked me the question of “Have I ever thought of getting a gym” at the time I had actually dreamed of it but I did not have the means to really step out and fully walk into this dream. In answering his question with an astounding yes. He follows with the phrase of “I want to invest in you” . I did not really take him as seriously as I should have because it felt as though it was just casual conversation. To make a long story short, he meant what he said, and built the place that I am currently running through. This moment mattered to me simply because he had no real reason to take this chance on me. He believed in me more than I believed in myself at that time. He told me that God told him that this is what he needed to do and I am forever grateful for his obedience .

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My business is Xplosive Athletics, which is a basketball gym in Humble, Tx. Xplosive Athletics is not just any basketball facility but it’s a place where we are dedicated to using basketball as a tool to draw people to Christ and grow them mentally, physically, and spiritually. The vision of this being built was on my failures as a college athlete. I quit out half way through my career because physically, mentally, and spiritually I was not prepared for where I was. This ultimately resulted in me not having the resources to sustain me as an athlete. Through Xplosive I want to prepare athletes for what I wasn’t prepared for but most importantly I want them to know their identity in Christ so that if being successful through this sport or any sport doesn’t turn out as they planned, they know that it doesn’t define them. What fulfillment I get most through this brand is children saying yes to Jesus Christ and being born again. Giving them success that cannot be measured by the world’s standards, but by Gods

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I would say that I had to learn is that although there are things you can do by yourself, it’s better to find a team to do it with. In the beginning, there were a lot of things I had to manage on my own. I had a hard time even trusting anyone to care for the business and the ministry in the way that I did but eventually I had to recognize that in order to cover more ground I had to give up my control of being in control . In doing so, little by little I brought people on board and it has blessed me tremendously.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
There were a couple times I didn’t really know where the money would come from. Transparently 3-6 months into the business I was crying out to God questioning if this is what He even was asking of me and if He was sure He asked the right person to run this place. I was expecting over night results and becoming defeated that it was not growing at the pace that I felt it should. I wanted to quit. In fact, I’ve mentioned it a few times to a few close people around me but God kept reassuring me that He would make a way and that He wouldn’t call me to a place that He wasn’t going to sustain me in. So I eventually, stop worrying and every problem that came to me I started praying and telling God “it’s yours” . It sounds simpler than what it actually was but truthfully those prayers had a lot of tears behind them but all and all.. He has been keeping his promise.
