We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Seth Jubb. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Seth below.
Seth, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
After living in NYC for 10+ years, I thought I’d seen and experienced it all. It turns out that part of the magic of living in the greatest city in the world is its ability to constantly surprise and delight you! When I woke up to a text message from an unknown number inviting me to speak on a massively successful podcast, featuring a comedian that I’d seen live many times in my early college years (yes, we also have photos together from that time!), I felt like I was on an episode of Punk’d. I responded asking for details and found out that a close friend of mine, who I’ve given chart readings to for years, had a producer friend on this show and had passed on the good word about me and my business offerings. Within 48 hours, I was recording in their Chelsea studio, starstruck, and feeling that full-circle moment we all hope for as young up-and-coming hopefuls in the city of dreams. Beyond the special circumstances surrounding this kismet meeting, I couldn’t have anticipated what would come next. After our episode aired right before New Year’s, I suddenly had a surge of new business that ended up lasting for over 3+ months. Yes, this is all from a single podcast episode. Even now, I’m in awe of the power of that kind of platform and the impact it can have on a small business owner’s life and livelihood.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I created The Stargayzer, my astrology & wellness business, with a simple mission: to bring healing & loving change into the world through spiritual practices and the rich knowledge found in astrology.
My name is Seth but those who know me well call me Sol. I’ve studied astrology, yoga, and mystical philosophy for the past 8 years, and I’ve been a consulting astrologer offering chart readings & in-person workshops in the NYC area for the past five. While working at Vogue US in my early twenties, I crossed paths with another burgeoning astrologer and discovered the incredible, millennia-long tradition of cosmic wisdom that helps give shape, color & dimension to the constellation of our personality, also know as our “natal promise”.
What makes me and my practice unique is my grounded, embodied approach. Yes, like other astrologers, I offer horoscopes, however, I’m not here to be a crystal ball. I’m here to empower, inspire and educate you on how to live up to your fullest, highest potential. By acknowledging that a mirror exists between the movements “above” and “below,” we ultimately nurture a profound awareness that our human condition is embedded in a living cosmos that we very luckily get to creatively participate in.
I also put special importance on holistic wellness tools such as bodywork, breathwork & meditation in order to cultivate stronger vitality AKA life-force. I’m a registered yoga teacher and offer what I call “cosmic yin-yasa” yoga classes both in-person and online. My favorite thing about this work is that the applications are truly endless. Whether it’s a 1-on-1 session, group event, brand collaboration or special project, there is no limit to the ways in which we can explore & express our cosmic potential.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Transparency in the financial implications of running your own business is incredibly important to me. I grew up in a near-poverty level home, where my parents both worked multiple jobs trying to keep food on the table. I witnessed them take out a massive business loan to start their own entrepreneurial dream only to result in that same business shuttering five years later with over 6 figures in accumulated debt. Unfortunately, that reality is all too real for the vast majority of people who try to live out their “American dream”.
For me, I knew that a slow burn was essential if I wanted to learn from the mistakes my parents made. I also knew that quality investment and consistent effort inevitably leads to success. That’s why I decided to take out a small personal loan to hire a web & brand designer, who I knew would help bring my vision to life at the caliber I hold myself to. Of course, this was also a decision made after creating a financial plan with my financial advisor (who is free to work with!), so that there would be a guaranteed return on my investment.
My biggest piece of advice is to ask for help, especially when you *don’t* think you need it. When you run your own business there’s so often the expectation you have to do it all but the reality is that the only way it’s sustainable is to lean on your community, seek out other SBO’s for support, and recognize where your expertise ends and someone else’s begins.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
In a services-oriented industry word of mouth is everything. I’ve been building my business for almost five years now and it’s been steadily growing thanks to the “social proof” I get after every interaction, be it virtual or in-person.
I’ve also discovered more recently that my ability to draw in new clientele is also connected to my ability to lean into my strengths. For example, I spent years pouring so much time and money into social media marketing, thinking that if I had a huge number of followers I would be set for life. I learned, however, that while social media has it’s perks, it doesn’t hold a candle to what’s possible when I directly and consistently engage with people on an individual level, be that in a podcast conversation, chart reading, or in-person event. It certainly takes longer to grow but the quality and sustainability of that growth is so much stronger compared to “insta-fame” which, frankly, often results in the kind of growth that causes someone to miss their moment for lack of preparedness and experience.
