We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Destiny Sweet a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Destiny , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Nails have always been a passion for me. I used to spend hours on YouTube watching nail videos, trying to replicate designs and shapes. As I graduated high school I remember not being ready or even wanting to go to college. I kept thinking I wanted to peruse something I was passionate about. I literally dropped out and told my mom I wanted to be a nail tech. I started cosmetology school shortly after.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always been passionate about nails since a child. I would binge watch YouTube videos. I would buy kiss acrylic nail kits from Walgreens and do sets on myself, trying to replicate shapes and designs I would see. Once I graduated high school, I initially was in college, but it wasn’t for me. I stopped going to attend cosmetology school. After graduating cosmetology school I worked in 2 nail salons. One in which a client convinced me to make a social media page. Social media definitely opened different doors for me as a nail tech. I was able to attract my own clients regardless of any location I worked, and create my own policy and pricing.
As a nail tech I love bringing my clients designs to life. I love quirky designs and colors. I also love a good theme set! One of my favorite nail sets, I painted the FSU mascot by hand! My clients always tell me I pay attention to detail!
Nails aren’t my only focus. I love to make my clients feel welcomed and well accommodated. I openly communicate with them to ensure they’re comfortable. I now have a private suite ensuring an elevated experience. Through all my creative work and best arts I can truly say I am most proud of my journey becoming a nail technician. Being a business owner builds character, and faith. I’m so grateful to be able to enhance women’s beauty and confidence!

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe consistency helped build my reputation for sure! I focused on making sure my work was consistent. Meaning I always took my time with designs, cuticle care and nail care! I wouldn’t skip a step! I have a few clients say “oh this is my favorite part!”

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
At my previous location the air conditioning went out for 3 months! Temperature plays a huge role in my craft. Acrylic dries quicker or slower depending on the temperature in the air. Things such as portable air conditioners and fans were no help! I was forced into taking 2-3 clients a day because it was simply too hot to spend a full day of work. Besides that going back and forth between emails with the property managers of the building. It was a nightmare. It lead me to look for a new location, I was afraid of losing clients being to the fact that the new location would be further. I still see the same faces !
