We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joonhee Park. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joonhee below.
Hi Joonhee, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of my most meaningful projects is the brand identity project for Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) where I personally love to visit in Seoul. It was meaningful to me because I chose the subject based on my own connection to the space. The project gave me the chance to explore DDP more deeply, reflect on my real experiences there, and identify what was missing or could be improved from a visitor’s perspective.
The concept was inspired by DDP’s unique architecture and the vibrant energy of Dongdaemun, full of life, people, and movement throughout both day and night. It was also my first time creating a custom grid system for a logo inspired from architecture material, which pushed me to create a system for identity design. Designing the grid and applying it across the identity was a new challenge, and it became one of the most rewarding parts of the project.

Joonhee, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I’m Joonhee Park, a graphic designer based in Los Angeles, with an emphasis on visual and brand identity design.
One of my favorite childhood memories is watching my aunt cook. I was mesmerized by how a pinch of paprika or a single clove of garlic could transform not just the flavor, but the entire experience of a dish. From those moments, I learned the importance of being detail-oriented and adventurous in my creative process. For me, design is much like preparing a meal—it requires a sincere, thoughtful approach. I challenge myself to refine every detail, whether it’s tweaking the Bézier curve of a shape or fine-tuning color values to ensure everything works harmoniously. As a designer, I’m always exploring possibilities and seeking creative solutions.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being able to spark curiosity and joy in people. I love creating work that captures attention and makes someone smile or see things from a new perspective. I also find it inspiring to share ideas and hear others’ thoughts, as it often challenges me to think differently and see in new ways. The idea that design can shape how people interact with the world is what keeps me motivated.

Have you ever had to pivot?
One meaningful turning point for me was receiving my first paycheck. Instead of spending it on myself, I bought my brother a tennis T-shirt. That experience helped me realize how fulfilling it is to use what I’ve earned to do something meaningful for someone else. It reminded me of why I enjoy cooking. I’ve always found joy in seeing others enjoy what I make. That moment deepened my understanding of how much I value creating things that make others feel seen and cared for.
