We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Teresa Brekke. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Teresa below.
Teresa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
For over 20 years, I worked in cosmetology, pouring my heart into making others feel confident and beautiful. I loved the relationships I built with clients and the creativity of the work—but over time, the physical toll became undeniable. My back began to ache constantly, and with it came a creeping sense of burnout. I knew I couldn’t keep going at that pace forever, and something inside me started to whisper: There’s more.
I had always been curious about skincare. There was something so fascinating about the science of it—how healing and transformation could happen at the surface and below it. The more I thought about it, the more I started to dream: What if I went back to school? What if I gave myself permission to start over?
So, I took a leap.
I researched programs, prayed through the decision, and finally enrolled. That season of going back to school was amazing—stretching, invigorating, and full of growth. It reminded me that it’s never too late to chase something new. Not only did I gain the knowledge and skills I needed to pursue skincare professionally, but doors started opening in ways I never expected. One of the biggest surprises was being offered a job as an instructor at the college where I trained.
Now, I’m launching my own skincare business—something I never would have imagined a few years ago. I get to combine my years of experience in the beauty industry with a new focus that’s easier on my body and aligned with where I am in life. The best part? I feel excited again. Energized. Like I’m walking in a new chapter that God prepared just for me.
This business isn’t just a job—it’s a fresh start. It’s proof that burnout doesn’t have to be the end of the story. And I hope my journey encourages others to listen to the quiet nudges, honor their well-being, and believe that it’s never too late to begin again.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Today, I’m proud to be launching my own skincare business where I offer customized facials, advanced skin treatments, and holistic skincare solutions tailored to each client’s unique needs. I specialize in treatments that nourish the skin while also creating a relaxing, rejuvenating experience. My approach is rooted in both science and care—I take the time to truly listen to my clients, understand their skin concerns, and create treatment plans that work for them.
What sets me apart is the heart behind the work. I’ve walked through burnout. I know what it’s like to feel run-down, unseen, or just in need of some genuine care. My goal isn’t just to improve skin—it’s to offer a space where people feel refreshed, encouraged, and cared for. I believe skincare is more than a luxury—it’s a form of wellness. And when done with compassion and excellence, it can truly be transformative.
For anyone considering working with me, I want you to know: I’m here to serve you, support your skin goals, and help you feel your best from the inside out. Whether you’re dealing with acne, aging skin, dryness, or just need a moment to breathe and be cared for—I’ve got you. This is a business built on experience, passion, and a deep love for helping others thrive.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
In my experience, the best way to get new clients is through genuine connection, consistent quality, and word-of-mouth referrals. People want to feel seen, heard, and cared for—and when you provide that consistently, they naturally want to tell others about it.
One of the most powerful tools has been building real relationships with existing clients. When someone feels valued and leaves an appointment feeling better than when they walked in, they remember that—and they share it with friends and family. Happy clients become your biggest advocates.
I also believe in the importance of showing up where your audience is—whether that’s on social media, in local events, or partnering with other businesses. Sharing helpful skincare tips, before-and-after results, or even a peek into your story and passion helps potential clients connect with you on a personal level before they ever book an appointment.
Another key is creating an experience that goes beyond just a service. I want every client who walks into my space to feel like they’re not just getting a treatment—they’re being cared for. That experience is what makes people come back and bring others with them.
Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of referral programs, reviews, and community involvement. Offering a small incentive for referrals, asking happy clients to leave a review, or simply showing up to support local events or causes can go a long way in growing your client base authentically.
To me, attracting new clients starts with serving the ones you have with excellence. When your heart is in it and your service reflects that, growth follows.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
There was a time when I almost bought an existing business. From the outside, it seemed like a great opportunity—established clientele, solid income, and in the beauty industry where I had already invested over 20 years of my life. I was excited, and I started looking into it seriously. I even ran the numbers and imagined what life would look like if I stepped into ownership.
But when I looked deeper, especially at the time and energy it would take, I realized it would pull me away from my family far more than I was willing to give. I’ve always tried to prioritize my family, and the truth was, I didn’t want to build a business that came at the expense of being present for them.
And then there was this hesitation I couldn’t ignore—not fear, exactly, but a quiet check in my spirit. I’ve learned over time that those feelings are often the Holy Spirit’s way of guiding me, and I’m so grateful I listened.
Because if I had gone forward with buying that business, I wouldn’t have had the freedom to take the next opportunity that came: going back to school for esthetics, and eventually being offered an instructor position at the very college I trained at. That would have never happened if I had tied myself to a business that wasn’t the right fit.
Now, I’m building something new—my own skincare business—on my terms, in God’s timing. It’s something I truly love, something that gives me life, and something that lets me keep my priorities straight.
Saying no to that business was hard at the time, but it opened the door to everything I’m doing now. I’m so glad I trusted that hesitation and followed peace instead of pressure.
