We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Barrett Lais. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Barrett below.
Barrett, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
At Twenty to Scratch, we break away from the traditional mold of public driving ranges, crowded simulators, and disconnected golf services. Our private, membership-only 24/7 golf simulator facility offers an elevated experience that fuses elite training, entertainment, and community—all under one roof.
Unlike standard golf facilities, Twenty to Scratch functions more like a private club. Members gain round-the-clock access to state-of-the-art simulators in a quiet, exclusive environment, ideal for focused practice or hosting guests. Our members lounge features poker tables and real-time Vegas sports odds, making it a unique hub for both serious golfers and social gatherings.
We go far beyond simply offering a place to hit balls. Members benefit from:
College recruiting guidance from an NCAA coaching veteran
Private instruction and practice plans tailored to each player
Custom club builds, repairs, and fittings done on-site
Exclusive retail access to clubs, balls, and gear at the lowest prices in the region
Our model was built because traditional ranges and pro shops often fall short—they’re impersonal, crowded, and fragmented. One of our members once said, “I used to spend more time driving to lessons, fittings, and stores than actually getting better. Here, everything’s in one place—and it’s mine.”
We’ve created something different: a personal, high-performance golf environment where players—from beginners to college hopefuls—can improve, connect, and enjoy the game on their own terms. That’s the Twenty to Scratch difference.

Barrett, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Meet Barrett Lais & the Story Behind Twenty to Scratch
My name is Barrett Lais, and golf has shaped nearly every chapter of my life. I played NCAA Division I golf for the University of Arkansas, where I was a four-year letterman. After graduating, I spent over 15 years coaching at the highest levels of collegiate golf, including serving as Associate Head Coach at Arkansas. During that time, I helped coach 17 All-Americans, 10 players who went on to play professionally, and multiple champions across the NCAA, SEC, and PGA Tour. I’ve also coached PGA Tour players like Denny McCarthy and Austin Cook, and guided numerous juniors on the road to college golf success.
But as passionate as I was about coaching elite players, I saw a major gap in the golf world: recreational golfers and competitive juniors lacked consistent access to personalized guidance, modern technology, and an all-in-one training environment. Most ranges and academies were built on a transactional model—come for a lesson or a bucket of balls, and leave. There was no community. No private setting. No continuity in development.
That’s why I created Twenty to Scratch—a private membership, 24/7 golf simulator facility and training club based on the principle that improvement requires not just access, but structure, coaching, and culture.
What We Offer
Twenty to Scratch is more than a place to hit balls. It’s an ecosystem built for serious improvement and social connection. Here’s what makes us unique:
24/7 Access to Private Golf Simulators – Members can train when it works for their schedule, not ours.
Private Club Atmosphere – Our members lounge includes poker tables, real-time Vegas sports odds, and a social space to entertain friends or clients.
College Golf Recruiting Guidance – We guide juniors and parents through every step of the recruiting process with strategies, schedules, and support from someone who’s lived it.
Custom Club Building, Repairs, and Fittings – On-site workshop services built around each player’s swing, not off-the-rack standards.
Private Coaching and Practice Plans – Each member gets access to data-driven instruction and customized practice routines based on their goals.
Discounted Retail Golf Products – We offer the lowest prices on Titleist, FootJoy, Vokey, and more—better than local shops or online retailers.
The Problem We Solve
The biggest problems most golfers face are inconsistency, lack of distance, not knowing what to practice, and for juniors, feeling completely lost in the college recruiting process. We solve that by offering a plan, a place, and a team to help each member progress with purpose. Whether you’re a weekend warrior trying to break 80 or a junior player dreaming of playing D1 golf, we’re here to guide every step of the journey.
What I’m Most Proud Of
I’m most proud of the players I’ve helped—from the juniors who thought college golf was out of reach, to the pros who now tee it up on the PGA Tour. But more than anything, I’m proud that Twenty to Scratch gives people a place where they feel like they belong—a place where they can work on their game without distractions, be part of a community, and actually see progress.
What I Want People to Know
This isn’t your typical range. We’re not here to sell you a lesson or upsell your gear. We’re here to build better golfers, create real connections, and give our members a place they look forward to being part of. Whether you’re trying to shoot lower scores, get recruited, or just enjoy the game with friends, Twenty to Scratch offers a completely different golf experience—and one that actually works.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation was built on a foundation of results, relationships, and trust—earned over nearly two decades at the highest levels of competitive golf.
Proven Track Record: Coaching success at the NCAA Division I level was key. Over 15 years, I helped guide teams to 14 NCAA postseason appearances, developed 17 All-American players, and coached 10 players who turned professional, including multiple PGA and Korn Ferry Tour winners. That kind of consistent success earned trust from players, parents, and fellow coaches.
Player Development at Every Level: I became known not just for working with elite college and tour players, but also for helping junior golfers get recruited, improve their games, and navigate the often-confusing path to college golf. Parents and players valued that I had walked the road myself and knew what it took to get to the next level.
Tour-Level Instruction: Coaching PGA Tour players like Austin Cook and Denny McCarthy further cemented my credibility as someone who understands the game at the highest level and can translate that into real improvement for any golfer.
Hands-On, Personalized Approach: Whether I was on the range, in a simulator bay, or walking a junior through a college call, people knew they were getting honest feedback, tailored instruction, and a coach who genuinely cared. I wasn’t selling quick fixes—I was offering a long-term plan.
Building Twenty to Scratch: When I launched Twenty to Scratch, my reputation gave the business immediate momentum. People knew they weren’t just joining a simulator facility—they were getting access to a tour-proven coach, a true golf development system, and a private club culture that wasn’t available anywhere else.
Ultimately, what built my reputation was a combination of high-level expertise, genuine care for my clients, and a relentless commitment to helping players improve—not just swing, but succeed.
