We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dominique Akins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dominique below.
Dominique, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
It takes motion and consistency to be successful in any business. You never see success in those who don’t get going or over think their way out of movement! Failure is inevitable and it will for sure happen. But fail and fail fast and know when to pivot. Don’t keep trying to drill a stripped-out screw. It’s done and so is that idea so move on to the next!

Dominique, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Dominique Akins and I am the owner and director of Peaky’s Cosmetology for the Culture Beauty College. Growing up as a kid in the small town of Pine Bluff, AR, I always knew I had a passion for the beauty industry. I also had a passion for education. Playing schoolteacher with my cousins during summer breaks at granny’s was one of my favorite activities. As an adult, after running from my calling many years, I decided to give it a go with what I was best at, beauty and education! After 5 years of dedication, my dreams came true. I went from achieving my cosmetology license, to becoming a Cosmo instructor, to changing the game and opening my own school.
I did this by in record time by having good character traits and staying in motion. I used integrity and customer service to build a following and clientele. I used my own journey to show my future students that anything is possible. I did hair and bought equipment for a business Id yet to have. I wrote down my goals and made weekly to do list with small tasks to channel to big results. I reminded myself that Rome was not built in a day but guess what,…It was one day completed!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn asking those for advice that had not been down the roads I planned to travel. It is was not in their plans to discourage me, but it was in their fears that birthed discouragement.

Have you ever had to pivot?
There was a time in my career where I had to pivot this year by deciding to close my salon. I won’t say running a salon and a school is not possible but I had to pivot to what was more important at the time. I chose to close the salon because it had less impact on others. My salon was booth rent and I was not employing enough renters to cover the expenses. Although the salon was my first achievement, it was time to let it go.
