We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laura Griffin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laura below.
Laura , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was a bank manager for a large national bank. I was about to have my daughter and the thought of working 6 days a week and 50+ hours a week wasn’t appealing. When we started to factor in day care costs I was basically going to work to pay for daycare.
My hubby and I talked about what I wanted to do for a job. He asked if there was ever something that I wanted to do but never did. I had taken real estate classes in college which I loved. I had worked in the mortgage industry and HOA management which I really liked. We talked about starting a business as a Real Estate Agent. I ended up calling the agent that helped us buy a house a year before and started my journey as a Real Estate Agent.
I struggled at the beginning with balancing clients and my daughter who was just a few months old. It took me a lot of trial and error to figure out how to balance motherhood and my new business. It wasn’t until I had my son and started to realize that helping moms with buying and selling a home was my passion. By networking with other moms I was able to grow my business. It also gave me the idea of The Loudoun Moms which is a Facebook Group for moms in my county. Not only did it give me a space to connect, make friends and get my answers about motherhood answered it allowed me to grow my business by networking with moms all while taking care of my kids. Real estate is a realtionship business and my group allows me to build relationships.
I never dreamed that almost 12 years later I would have the success that I have all while raising our two kids, running The Loudoun Moms Group and my volunteer work. I am a top agent in my brokerage and really love my job. I am also now able to coach other agents on how to have it all as a mom and a Real Estate Agent.

Laura , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a mom of a 6th grader and 3rd grader. My brand has been helping clients trade up their current home and move into a bigger home that fits their needs. Due to my moms group and networking with other moms my business tends to help a lot of moms with their needs of finding a new home.
Due to my hubby and I moving 9 times over the last 16 years, some of it military moves I understand how stressful moving can be. I know how to make it a little less stressful, but lets be real moving is always stressful. Couple that with moving with 2 kids I understand the complexities of buying and selling a home with kids. The secret to my success is having a plan to help my clients navigate buying and selling a home with kids. I often talk about how we can hide toys, how to make their house shine even with the kids spilling spaghetti on the walls or how to handle showings while balancing nap time and keeping the house clean while everyone it living there.
I have become the Real Estate Mommy or at least that is what clients call me and I wear that title with honor.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I started in Real Estate I was on a team that provided leads from online lead sources. I hated having to get leads from people who clicked a button a website to see a house. It was always in the middle of dinner time or bed time. When my daughter was little my hubby worked nights so I couldn’t manage feeding her and giving her a bath before bed all while trying to call leads. On the weekends I wanted to spend precious time with my hubby and daughter vs doing open houses. I almost left the business because I felt like I wasn’t successful or never could be.
It wasn’t until I learned that my super power was networking and connecting. Once I learned that networking and connecting with other moms could help me in my business my business took off. I just need to find another way to grow my business that wasn’t the traditional way that my Broker taught me to do it. My Facebook Group has helped me with growing my business as well. Over the years I have learned to leverage the power of the Group to grow my business into what I had always envisioned it would be all while balancing raising kids and volunteer work.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I have built my audience on social via my Facebook Group. I have grown the group from 10 of my friends to over 12k members. When I started the group it was just fo friends and any other moms that wanted to join. I never realized how big it would get or how much it would help moms in my community. It has become a safe space for our local mom community to ask questions, get support or just connect with other moms who are on the mom journey.
I often get asked by other people who want to start a Facebook Group about how it grew so big. They are afraid to take the leap and do it. I will say start a group and fill it with good content, clear rules, and sprinkle in a little fun and people will join.
