Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Barb Flunker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Barb, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I was always creative in making art for myself ~ painting, drawing, assemblage, collage. My teenage son told me my art was good and I should show it to galleries. He knew I was not listening. A few weeks later he gave me a list of six things that he thought I needed to do. I had business cards made and visited a few commercial galleries as he had directed. Even though no one took my work that day, the gallery directors were supportive which boosted my confidence. Looking back if I had started earlier I may have had more time to make the art and navigate the art community. On the other hand, I believe that opportunities come when they are supposed to. The key is to act on the opportunity.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Bright, bold, uplifting, textural, energizing, nature, movement and abstraction define my paintings, I hope that the viewer receives peace, joy, positivity and fun as they view the paintings, assemblages and collages. I hope they can feel an “ah”moment of I can meet this day and find beauty in this day. Some of the most rewarding moments are when a client or future collector sees my work and you observe the joy in their face and entire body and hear it in their words. Being invited to exhibit my work and collectors buying my work is also invigorating.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
At The Modern in Ft Worth, Texas, I was introduced to Frank Bowling’s work. What a treat. His work completely energized me and I realized that my work is significant. Follow my heart and soul as I work with confidence. Think expansively.

Reading Twyla Tharp’s ‘Keep It Moving: Lessons for the Rest of Your Life’ was expanding. Move and expand, not shrink and contract. Be big, fill your space! I do not have to adhere to the confines of the art world. My art can and should be from my soul and placed before the world.
