Kylee , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
I’ve been braiding hair since middle school. From a young age, I dreamed of either working under a professional to learn the ropes of becoming a skilled hairstylist and braider or one day owning my own salon. In 2022, I decided to take a leap of faith and officially launch my braiding business. Things were going well, but I began to feel like something was missing — the professional structure and growth I truly desired.
At the start of this year, I came across an ad for a salon hiring braiders, and I was immediately excited. The owner was a celebrity braider, and I saw this as a huge opportunity for exposure, learning, and growth in my braiding career. I remember praying about the job before my interview, but on the day of, I began having second thoughts. Looking back, I now realize that was my discernment warning me that something didn’t feel quite right. But because I was so eager to work under someone with such a respected name, I ignored those feelings.
After the interview, I felt confident and excited. A few days later, I received my acceptance letter — I was going to be working in my first-ever salon. On my first day, I was nervous, but the owner assured us that we’d be trained in professionalism and new braiding techniques. I told myself, “This is what I’ve been praying for.”
But after a month, things started to change. I began to see why I had those doubts early on. I was being taken advantage of. Everything I had worked so hard to build felt like it was slipping away. My loyal clients stopped booking, I was losing money, and most importantly, I lost my spark.
What I thought would be a valuable learning experience turned into a situation where I was essentially working as an unpaid assistant. I wasn’t gaining exposure, learning the business, or growing my clientele — I was doing free work with no appreciation or compensation. It hurt deeply because I genuinely wanted it to work out.
Eventually, I reached a breaking point and decided to walk away. I went back to doing what I was doing before. At first, I felt like I had failed myself and my family because I had been so excited about this opportunity. But with time and reflection, I realized an important lesson: when something seems too good to be true, always seek discernment from God. What looks like a blessing might actually be a distraction from your true path.
The beauty industry can be tough — there are people who will take advantage if you let them. The moment someone tries to dim your light or change who you are, that’s when you know it’s not your path. Always follow what your heart desires, not what your flesh craves. And most importantly, trust that when something isn’t meant for you, it’s only because something better is on the way.

Kylee , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello, my name is Kylee Koranteng. I’m from the Dallas area and currently reside in Irving, Texas.
I entered the hair industry because I’ve always known this was my passion. As a braider, I specialize in a variety of styles — from knotless braids to Boho braids — and I take pride in helping my clients feel confident and beautiful.
Many people often feel overwhelmed when it comes to maintaining their hair, and that’s where I step in. I educate my clients on proper hair care, product recommendations, and maintenance tips to ensure their hair stays healthy and manageable between appointments.
What sets me apart is my ability to create a safe, welcoming space for my clients. Although I’m an introvert, I truly enjoy when my clients feel comfortable opening up and sharing their thoughts, feelings, or experiences during our time together.
One of the things I’m most proud of is my resilience — my ability to keep going even when life gets tough. I understand that we all face challenges, but it’s my perseverance that drives me forward.
For me, doing hair is about so much more than just making money — it’s about uplifting others, spreading positivity, and making people feel good about themselves, inside and out.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Before starting my braiding business, I spent a lot of time watching videos and scrolling through TikTok, trying to figure out how to gain clients and get my work seen. Even though I didn’t have any clients or followers at the time, I still started planning. I wrote down ideas and took note of strategies I saw others using successfully.
One of the most helpful tips I found through TikTok was joining Facebook groups based in my area or state. That’s where I began putting myself out there. I also learned that offering specials or promotions can help attract new clients and increase visibility.
Even though I’m still growing and my audience isn’t very large yet, I stay consistent. I try to post content every day or every other day and experiment with different types of videos and strategies to see what works best.
If you’re just starting out and looking to build your social media presence, my advice is:
• Join Facebook groups in your local area and actively share your work.
• Post consistently on TikTok and Instagram.
• Use relevant hashtags to reach more people.
• Most importantly, show up as your real, authentic self — that’s what people connect with the most.
With time, effort, and consistency, your online presence will grow.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
To maintain strong relationships with my clients, I typically follow up with them about two weeks after their appointment. I check in to see how their hair is holding up and provide helpful tips on how to care for and maintain their style.
I also prioritize timely communication by responding promptly to any direct messages or inquiries about services.
To foster brand loyalty, I occasionally offer exclusive specials to my regular clients — such as a $100 knotless braid promotion or Mother’s Day discounts. I also provide complimentary touch-up services for clients who consistently book with me. These gestures show appreciation and help build lasting connections with my clientele.
