We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Delena Mai a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Delena thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Being a nail tech is more then just a job for me. What I’ve learned from being a nail tech for over a decade is that I love when people leave the salon happy and feeling great about themselves. My clients come in and i get to connect with everyone in different ways, this makes me feel like I have a special bond with each and every client. So my mission is more then just a pretty nail set, it’s making them feel seen and heard. We also get to watch each other grow in many ways.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Getting into this industry was easy for me. Growing up my parents worked on nail salons. When we moved to SC my parents decide to open up their very own nail salon. On weekends I would hangout at the salon with them. When I turned 13 I knew I wanted to become a nail tech so I would play around with their tools and supplies. After graduating high school I went straight into nail school and I’m so happy I did. I’m an artsy person so this was the perfect career for me. Starting out acrylic nails were huge ! Today nail techs have so many more options to work with such as hard gel, builder gel and also gel x. But being a nail tech is more than just the products we use. We become very close to our clients and I’m proud to say I am able to provide a service and also have a very special relationship with each and everyone.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Definitely word of mouth. I like to learn every clients likes and dislikes. I think my clients, old and new appreciates when I listen to them even if we aren’t talking about nails.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I still believe in word of mouth 100% but social media has grown so much since I’ve graduated nail school. Social media allows us to share our work with hundreds of people. The trick is to continue posting daily and to not stress out about the likes and shares.
