Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Crystal Fletcher. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Crystal, appreciate you joining us today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
I started my business with no clients, no resources, and a dream. For 15 years, I’ve dedicated myself to doing hair, pouring in blood, sweat, and tears—even after giving up twice. I began as a home-based stylist, unable to provide hair, and faced countless setbacks, losing more money than I made at times. But I stayed committed. I worked hard, stepped out on faith, and refused to give up on what I truly wanted. Today, I operate out of my own suite and provide everything my clients need, proudly serving hundreds of loyal, returning customers. My journey is proof that perseverance and faith can turn a vision into reality.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a hairstylist from Capitol Heights, Maryland, where hair isn’t just my passion—it’s my art. I’ve turned that passion into fashion by creating custom clothing made from braiding hair. I’m not just a stylist, I’m a creator—one of a kind and set apart by my vision. I’m blessed with a unique talent that I’m proud to share with the world
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
As a business owner, a major lesson I had to unlearn was the importance of charging my worth—no matter what. In the beginning, I often did hair for free or for next to nothing, especially when I was struggling, because I felt obligated to help family and friends. But I realized that constantly undervaluing myself only hurt me and my business. Respecting my time, talent, and prices is a form of support, and anyone who truly believes in me will understand that.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I grew my social media following from 3K to 30K in just a year by staying consistent, keeping up with trends, engaging with my followers, and most importantly—just being myself. I joke a lot (like, seriously), and my personality really shines through my content. My April Fools’ prank hit 10 million views and came with a wild mix of laughs and backlash. Some people loved it, others gave me a run for my money—but hey, publicity is publicity. The negativity actually opened doors: companies and influencers reached out with support and new opportunities. I’m always thankful for the haters… they keep me going.
