We recently connected with Nikki Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Nikki , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
When I first moved to Northern Virginia, I spent ten years working with Fairfax County Government as a community outreach worker. During that time, I discovered just how much rich, deeply rooted African American history exists in this region. I was surprised to learn how little of it was widely known or shared. That realization lit a fire in me. It became my mission to create a space where the legacies and contributions of African American culture could be honored, preserved, and celebrated.
African American history is all our history. It’s a history we can all be proud of and inspired by.

Nikki , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Throughout the process of creating The Culture Cup, I very quickly began to see that the celebration of African American history, art, and culture is not only important for African Americans, but for everyone. The Culture Cup not only shines a light on the stories and accomplishments of a people but it also shines a light on the legacies of an entire nation. African American history, art, and culture is something that we all can take pride in, can learn from, and be inspired by. And, I have had the amazing opportunity to witness this through this year.
I have seen exchanges in ideas and perspectives, I have seen creatives creating, I have seen heated debates around love, money and, and race, I have seen business partnerships made, I have seen pep talks & spiritual talks, I have witnessed resources pulled together to help those in need, But most of all, I have seen strangers from all backgrounds, connecting and becoming friends.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A week One week after opening my coffee shop, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Over the next year and a half, I balanced running my business, parenting my children, and undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and multiple surgeries. It wasn’t easy — but I showed up every day with intention, faith, and a vision for creating a space that nourishes community even in the hardest times.
This shop is more than a business — it’s a story of survival, love, and purpose. Every cup we serve carries the energy of resilience and a reminder that healing and growth can happen at the same time.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation within the community has been built on consistency, care, and connection. From day one, I’ve shown up not just to serve coffee, but to create a space where people feel seen, welcomed, and valued. Even while navigating a breast cancer diagnosis shortly after opening, I remained present — running my business, supporting local creatives, hosting cultural events, and building relationships one cup and conversation at a time.
People return not just because of the product, but because they trust the heart behind it. I believe in leading with integrity, showing up for my neighbors, and creating a space that reflects the spirit and resilience of our community.
