We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kara Vaval a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kara , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission is to help women become financially and emotionally independent so they can create lives and businesses that bring them joy and fulfillment. My mission includes helping women create time freedom from themselves as well financial independence so they can have the choice to walk away from anything that doesn’t serve them, including unfulfilling work and unfulfilling relationships. My mission is very meaningful to me because the reason I get to enjoy the life of fulfillment that I live today is that I was able to achieve financial independence for myself which allowed me to create the time and lifestyle freedom I promote to women but also, gave me the security and power to walk away from a marriage that once drained the life out of my soul, a choice many women don’t have because the are financially dependent. It’s about helping women achieve the life of their dreams, however unconventional the way, so they can be happy, joyful and satisfied during their human experience that only lasts about 28,000 days.

Kara , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I was 14 years old, my father who was 42 at the time was brutally murdered back home in Haiti. I went from a living a carefree, charmed and light hearted childhood to having to grow up overnight to not only fen for myself but also to co-parent my then 5 year old brother with my mother who had lost her entire center. My father was an incredible man and after his murder, I vowed to make something of myself and was determined to make him proud. At age 16, I moved to New York where I finished my last year of high school and enrolled myself in college. My maternal grandmother who lived in New York welcomed be with open arms and helped me get adjusted in New York. Only 2 months into my first year in college, my grandmother’s house on fire and she did not make it. I had to once more, pull myself by my boot straps and press on. I went on to take 18 credits a semester in college while holding down 3 jobs, graduating Cum Laude with a double major in Political Science and Business Management, with my last semester being spent interning with Congressman Engle of New York on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. I then moved to South Florida to attend Law School and become a licensed Florida attorney. Only months into my career as an Associate at a boutique securities litigation law firm, I found out I was pregnant with my son. In that instant, being a mom became more important than making partner at that law firm, which was my aspiration up until that point. I wanted time flexibility to be home with my son as I didn’t want to miss any of his milestones, flexibility my job did not offer. My prayers were answered when a woman walked up to me at a local target and offered me a facial with Mary Kay cosmetics. I built my Mary Kay business from home as a licensed attorney and didn’t miss a thing with my son. I then went on to start my law firm on the heal of my beauty business. Yes, you read that right, my Mary Kay business funded my law firm. That was 16 years ago. I became financially independent in the process and when it came time to walk away from a 13 year marriage that was draining my soul, I was able to do so, giving myself a new shot at happiness. I wouldn’t be here but for my resilience.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think the biggest pivot of my career was starting a Mary Kay beauty business as an already licensed attorney. Most people thought I was crazy but I believed in myself and took a bet on myself. This decisions changed the entire course of my life. I had never seen myself as an entrepreneur before but here I was starting a business for $100 which gave me the time and money freedom I was looking for at that time. I often say that I bought my freedom for $100. That pivot also had me experience a side of me I didn’t;t even know existed: the women empowerment side of me. It was during my Mary Kay days that I discovered my gift of inspiring women to action with my words. I went on to create my Laptop Lifestyle Lawyer brand through which I helped countless women walk away for unfulfilling law jobs into their own private practice, achieving time and money freedom like me. Through my Florida bar accredited programs, I provide women lawyers with a blueprint they can follow, shaving years off their learning curves and catapulting them into their lifestyle freedom.
