After years spent climbing the corporate ladder at Verizon Telematics, Patrick made a courageous decision that many dream about but few dare to follow through with. He left his stable, successful corporate career to dive head-first into entrepreneurship by establishing Velocity Custom Golf Cars.

“It’s definitely scary,” Patrick admits candidly. “Corporate life provides a lot of security—steady income, health benefits, a predictable path. Walking away from that comfort zone is intimidating, but the possibility of building something of your own outweighs the fear.”

Patrick’s transition wasn’t abrupt; it was a thoughtful and gradual shift. “When I noticed more than half of my energy and focus going toward my side business, I realized I wasn’t just doing a disservice to my employer—I was holding my own potential back,” he explains. Recognizing this tipping point was crucial for Patrick, who then knew it was time to fully invest in himself.

Once he committed fully, Patrick found freedom and fulfillment, despite the new pressures. “Suddenly, everything was up to me: finances, health insurance, managing employees, inventory control, real estate logistics—all tasks I’d never directly handled before,” Patrick says. Thankfully, he wasn’t entirely alone in this journey, crediting his wife as an essential partner in navigating these new challenges.

Professionally, the shift required Patrick to reinvent his skills from a sales role into one of leadership and comprehensive management. “There’s no one checking your performance but you. It demands a higher level of discipline. No sick days, no off-switch—it’s all you,” he reflects. Yet, despite the inherent pressures, the rewards of autonomy and the ability to fully dedicate himself to something he truly loves have been immeasurable.

When asked if he recommends others pursue a similar path, Patrick is emphatic: “If your vision makes sense on paper and aligns deeply with your heart—absolutely go for it.”

Starting small, he initially bought a few golf carts to recondition by cleaning them, installing new parts, and listing them for sale. As demand grew, Patrick realized he needed to purchase parts at lower costs to maximize profits, ultimately leading to the creation of Velocity Custom Golf Cars LLC.

In my previous corporate career, leads were provided, and my primary role was essentially closing sales. Now owning my own business, I’ve learned that personal relationships hold the highest value. Reputation is everything, and each interaction presents an opportunity for the best advertising. Unlike corporate culture, where reputation isn’t something constantly reviewed, as a business owner, I rely deeply on building and maintaining trust through every customer interaction.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?

The best source of new clients for us has undoubtedly been word-of-mouth referrals and community engagement. Our satisfied customers often become enthusiastic advocates for our business, sharing their positive experiences with friends and family. Additionally, actively participating in local events and maintaining a visible community presence has significantly helped us connect with potential clients and build a trusted brand reputation.
