We recently connected with Subra Doyle and have shared our conversation below.
Subra, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
Being a working musician and recording artist in 2025 requires a tremendous amount of creativity, determination and innovation to keep going. In a world where many don’t buy physical music and streaming pays fractions of pennies, it takes a lot of adaptability to progress.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a recording artist, performing artist, music teacher and film composer. I’m very proud of performing at major festivals and getting nominated for best original score (at the Berlin Film Festival).
As an artist, I’m always aiming to be as authentic and original as possible, which makes marketing myself a challenge sometimes, due to not fitting in a neat box.
My vision is to be the Picasso of music, in the sense of changing and exploring many styles of expression as part of my overall artistic expression.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I have been playing music since I was 7, I am now 37, and it has taken a quality of tenacity to not quit. In my lifetime I have seen the music industry radically change, growing up where physical media such as CDs were paramount to the music enthusiast, now in a world of streaming where you can access any music in the world for almost nothing.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The pay out for streaming is $0.003 per stream, which is almost nothing. You have to have a song stream millions of times to come close to the profits of selling 100 CDs. Quite a paramount difference. Through my career I have shifted to focusing on live performances and gigs and teaching music to stay a working professional in the field of my passion. I do still record and release music, but I do so in my home studio to keep costs as low as possible, so I can not take a massive financial loss to just release music. I got a degree in Digital Audio Technology with an emphasis in music production so I can achieve independence when recording and releasing original music.
