We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Evan Jacobs. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Evan below.
Evan , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
What is the biggest risk I’ve ever taken well to answer that question id have to say it was taking a risk in myself and the dreams I’ve created in life. About 10 years ago I would have never seen any of this happening for me I was in an accident that totally changed my life in every way imaginable the idea of me playing music was out of the picture the idea of me being an artist was gone at the age of 24 I suffered from a Major cardiac arrest incident that should leaving me blind deaf and and in a coma for a month after that I was left in a situation where it was either I was gonna let this defeat me or I was going to make something out of it and that’s exactly what I did I took that risk bet on myself and here I am today almost 11,years later alive and better than every all because I bet on myself.

Evan , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
It’s a pretty interesting story how I got started in music I was always creative growing up but not in a musical way it was more in a artistic way I could paint I could draw but one day as a teenager I saw somebody with two turntables and a mixer and I said to myself…hmm I can do that… For exactly 1 month I watched anything and everything I could on how to DJ what DJing is actually all about how to select you music how to mix and from then on it was set in stone that’s what I wanted to do on my 15th birthday all I did was beg my parents for DJ equipment but during those times there wasn’t much of a choice of equipment like today… I’ll never forget the day of my birthday my mom had came home with a box and inside was DJ equipment nothing close to what we have now it was so basic I remember it like it was yesterday just 2 cd players and the most basic mixer I remember my mother’s words to me”I hope you like you’re gift and making something from it” I still have that equipment to this day just to show how far I’ve come… Now I’m 35 soon to be 36 and music and DJing are still a major part of my life. A little while later I decided to start a group called epic City productions which was myself and a few other DJs that I knew at the time trying to learn and make their Way into music just like I was. And from that day forward DJ BLACKHAWK was born now with time and experience under my belt I’m the current founder of cerrrebralundertoneNYC that has taken me 20 years to craft

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Well in music everybody has their reason why they want to do it and everyone’s different but for me it’s about the feeling that I get looking out on the dance floor looking behind the DJ booth and seeing people dancing to your music selection, your groove your passion that’s what it is for me

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn would be to not be afraid to be who you are do not be afraid to love what you love and love what you do no matter who says anything to you because if you feel that that’s the right path that you need to go on then you need to do it growing up I was always afraid to walk into a room I was always afraid to talk to people I was always afraid to be in different situations but as time went on and I got older I realize that the only way to get out of that little box that you’re used to is to step out of it and once you step out of it the world is a lot different
